AKA Mom, Nana, Glo, Zoe, Glo -worm
Age 86 of Bedford, passed away peacefully with family by her side on December 6, 2018. Gloria grew up in Amherst, NS, daughter of Winnifred Lapraik (nee Davis) and Carlton Kilpatrick, where she was active in her church and school as a member of both Junior & Senior Choir, Young People’s Group, drama club & basketball team.
After involving herself with teaching Sunday School, leading CGIT and Young People’s Union at her hometown church, in 1953, she attended the United Church Training School in Toronto to become a Deaconess . She really wanted to do something worthwhile with her life. A week before graduation she met the brother of a matchmaking classmate. Mary Ellen Nettle introduced Gloria to Howard whom she would end up spending the next 65 years of her life with. After working nearly two years at St. Paul’s United Church in Fredericton as secretary and director of Christian Education they decide that a long-distance courtship by mail had lasted long enough and so she moved back to Toronto and they were married in Amherst in 1957.
After living in Toronto for 4 years they moved to the Maritimes (1961) living in St. John, NB for 4 years then to Lower Sackville, NS in 1966, where she stayed at home to raise their family. Gloria was a stay at home mom working briefly at a few part-time jobs and babysitting children in her home, which brought her great joy. She loved babies like no other. She also crafted her baking and cooking skills making the best home-made bread (brown & white), mustard relish, pickles, apple pie, tea biscuits, and strawberry jam you ever tasted. She re-entered the workforce in 1982 as the Bedford United Church administrative assistant retiring in 1997.
In 1970 she joined the Sackville Lioness Club as a charter member and was an active member for 32 years. She continued her love of singing as an alto member of Knox United Church Choir and enjoyed barbershop singing (bass) with Bluenose Tradition, Citadel Chimes and Scotian Aires. She loved the time spent with these groups of women as they meant more to her than just a group of women singing, they were a group of friends who enjoyed being together singing or slinging chilli.
She is survived by her loving husband, Howard; her sister Adrienne (Widgie) Baxter-Tingley; children Adrienne (Kelly) Patterson, Port Perry, ON, Kevin (Marsha) Nettle, Halifax, and Timothy (Odille) Nettle, Fall River; grandchildren Meghan, Kayley, Matthew, Ian, Haden, Gabriel and Samuel, and many loved nieces and nephews, and we can’t forget Tena. Pre-deceased by her parents, sister, Betty Fraser, and brother, Gene Kilpatrick.
Gloria also loved to read, watch the birds/ducks, cook, bake, do cross-words, anything related to music, and spending time with family on the Northumberland Strait, “the Shore”, each summer which she described, “as close to Heaven as one can get”. Her loving soul will be missed tremendously by all she graced. We hope she gets to see her father who she always looked forward to seeing in Heaven.
Funeral service will be held December 21st at 1:00pm at Bethany United Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Beacon House. Arrangements have been entrusted to TK Barnard Funeral Homes. Online condolences: www.tkbarnardfuneralhome.ca
