Frank Elmer Francis Smith
Frank Smith passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at the age of 95 years. His family will miss him, but are comforted by the knowledge that he is again with his beloved wife, Jean, who passed away eleven months ago after 70 years with him.
Frank was born September 3, 1923 and was the first of six children born to William and Grace Smith of Breton, AB. His life was defined by loyalty to family and pride in his work. He started work in a logging camp at the age of 15. Following service in WWII, he relocated to Grande Prairie and spent the rest of his life in the forest industry. He was particularly proud of the two decades he spent working for Canfor in Grande Prairie. After he retired, Frank and Jean indulged in their greatest love, which combined camping, fishing and road trips. A supreme trip would include family and friends.
Frank and Jean are survived by their 5 children: Eileen (Robert) Stierle, Fran (Peter) Biegel, Lyle (Shurl) Smith, Leona (Jerry) Wright, and Ron (Fran) Smith; 7 grandchildren: Christian (Jane) Schotz, Tamara (Mile Gillett), Aimee (Ryan) Orser, Dirk (Brie) Schotz, Jorden (Tom) Habib, Erieanna (Zach) Orich, and Garrett (Brandi) Smith; and 15 great-grandchildren. Frank is survived by his brother Bert (Doreen) Smith; sister Faye Freisz (Earnie Thompson); sister in-law Jennie Smith; step-sister in-law Judy Batke; and step-brother in-law Jim (Evelyn) Aldous.
He was predeceased by his parents William and Grace; wife Jean; Jean’s parents John Torbett and Eva McKeag; brothers: Jim Smith, Walter Smith, and Les Smith; brothers in-law Harry Freisz, David Torbett, John Torbett, and Edward Batke.
The family would like to thank the staff at Wild Rose Manor for their wonderful care of Frank over the last three years of his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at 11:00am, at Highland Park Church of Christ in Grande Prairie (9602 92 Ave.) with Pastor Alan Jones officiating. Coffee will be served in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
Memorial donations may be made to Pineridge Adventure Camp (c/o Church of Christ, 9602 92 Ave., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 0H4). Frank was very proud of his role in establishing the camp some fifty years ago.
