It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Oksana Ensslen (nee Chomiak) on February 13, 2019. Oksana was born in Krakow, Poland in 1942, and immigrated to Canada with her family at age six. In her youth she was active in Plast and danced with Shumka. While obtaining her degree at the University of Alberta she met her husband Dr. R.D. Ensslen, with whom she had five children. Oksana found fulfillment in her family, the Ukrainian Canadian community and her church. She was the past president of the St. John’s branch of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada and sat on the boards of many Ukrainian associations, including Ukrainian Canadian Social Services. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed gardening. She sang soprano with her church choir and toured with the Dnipro choir. Oksana cared for many people, including her own mama, Alexandra Chomiak, and her Teta, Olenna Loban in their waning years. Oksana is missed by her partner, Daniel Rudko; his children, Raina (Wilf) and Gord (Shannon) and their family. She loved her siblings, Marusia (Bruce), Halyna, Chrystia (John-Paul), Natalka (Myroslav) and Bohdan (Tatiana); her nieces, nephews and extended family. She was an exceptional mother to Katherine (Christopher), Steven (Darusha), Sonya (Tobin), Andrew (Gina) and Karen (Aaron). She lives in the memories of all, and in the character of her five grandchildren, Conrad, Clara, Maxim, Theodore and Alexandra. Prayers Wednesday, February 20 at 7 p.m., and Funeral Rite Thursday, February 21 at 10 a.m. both at St. John Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 10951 – 107 St., Edmonton. Very Reverend Cornell Zubritsky officiating with interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Flowers welcome or donations may be made to Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada.
