Michael Cahill
Died suddenly on February 16, 2019. Mike was 58 years old and still had a fence to build and trips to Nova Scotia to take.
Mike will be missed by his wife Kathy Schmidt (28 years) and his son Andrew Cahill. He will be dearly remembered by all the Schmidt family, of which he was a fundamental part. He will also be missed by the Clare family who made him a part of their life.
He will be remembered by his mother, Connie Pearson, and his sister, Katrina Pearson. He is previously deceased by his father, Michael Joseph Cahill Sr, and his sisters, Sherrie (Cahill) McTaggart and Joanne Cahill.
Mike was born in Listowel. He moved to Preston at age 16 and made Cambridge his home for the next forty-two years. Mike worked at ASL Canada Fans, Slade Eng Systems, Thermal Vision Systems, and Hanning House Retirement Home. Most recently he worked at Strassburger Windows and Doors, which he very much enjoyed.
He loved reading, cooking, and playing with his dogs in the backyard. He could sometimes be spotted at the Fiddle and Firkin (alias his local reading room). Mike could build anything for anyone. His friends and family benefited from his handiwork. He always gave generously of his time to others.
Mike loved being an active part of his Cambridge community. He was a member of the Committee of Adjustment for eight years, and an active member of the Cambridge Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee. He participated in the MS walk yearly, raising thousands, and he volunteered at local music festivals for many years. Over the last several years, he was a frequent guest columnist for the Cambridge Times. He also ran a blog called A Public Intellectual. Many local readers enjoyed his political and social banter.
Michael’s family will receive relatives and friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2019, at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. Visitation will continue from 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019 with a Celebration of Life at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow. Cremation has taken place.
