It is with our deepest sorrow to announce the passing away of our beloved mother, Mary Wong who was also well known as Chin Ho Chang, on February 22, 2019 at the age of 96.
Mary was born in Toy Shan, Sam Hap in Canton, China on May 20,1922.
In 1959, Mary moved from China with her two sons, Peter and Michael Fong/Fung and immigrated to Trinidad, West Indies, where she was united with her father, mother and her siblings. Surrounded by business with her parents and siblings under Singapore Grocery in Marabella, Mary soon learned the art of the grocery and parlor business on the island and later owned and operated John Wong Grocery with her husband, John Wong at Vistabella, where she made many close friends.
In 1974, Mary and John Wong, with their family Peter, Michael, June and Johnson together immigrated to Canada where she and her family lived happily together in Edmonton, Alberta. She worked at The Canterbury Inn, Holiday Inn, and The Corkscrew and after the passing of her husband, she later retired to babysitting grandchildren, gardening and social gatherings with her friends and relatives.
Mary is survived by her four children together with their families: Peter and Margaret Fong and family; Michael and Ella Fung and family; June (Wong) and Gary Roskewich and family; Johnson and Cheryle Wong and family. She has a total of 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Winston Dan Chin with his wife, Joyce Chin and family, together with numerous nephews and nieces, both in Edmonton and Toronto.
Viewing will held on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 from 6:00 p.m-8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Mary’s Life will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at 1:30 pm. Both will be held at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, Downtown Location.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
