Karen was born in Edmonton to Evan & Edythe Harrold on August 8, 1941, and grew up in a house on 106th Street across from the Alberta Legislature grounds with her twin brother Craig and younger sisters Diane and Candace.
As kids they enjoyed many picnics and music concerts at the Legislature and they were very fond of driving out to the family farms in Lamont and Wainwright to spend time with the relatives there. Karen loved riding horses with her cousin Melba, and they recall one cow was even tame enough to sit on!
Karen was certified in 1961 as a medical laboratory technician at the University of Alberta Hospital. She later worked for twenty years as a lab tech at the Provincial Laboratory for Public Health in Edmonton.
Karen was an avid participant in many sports including archery, badminton and tennis. She and her brother Craig were instrumental in forming the first junior tennis club in Edmonton.
In 1960 she met her future husband James Carmichael (1932-1998) during a tennis tournament at Kinsman Park. They loved playing tennis together and they raised two children, Cheryl and Greg, in the Holyrood area of Edmonton. As a family they spent time playing games, enjoying art projects and fossil hunting.
Karen loved art and left behind many works including oil paintings, drawings and crafts.
She and Jim became interested in the Bible’s message in the mid 1960’s and became avid students of the Bible. The entire family took comfort in the Bible’s comforting message that “the meek will possess the earth, And they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.” – Psalm 37:11
Karen passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon February 21, 2019. She will be remembered for her many generous, kind and helpful acts. She had a strong faith in the Bible’s hope that “There is going to be a resurrection.” – Acts 24:15
