It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Hilda « Heather » Gilmour of Fort St. John, BC on February 13, 2019.
Heather was born in Goodfare, AB to Phillip and Olga Meck. She had fond memories growing up on the farm with her three brothers. Heather wanted to become a teacher, but further studies were too expensive. She found a job as a waitress and met her husband, Floyd. They eventually settled in Fort St. John and raised 2 children, Ken and Gwen. Heather and Floyd co-owned City Shoes in Fort St John, but eventually divorced and sold the business.
Heather worked at a number of jobs and met the love of her life, George. They enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time together. Unfortunately, George and his brother had a fatal accident while fishing on the Peace River. Heather was never the same after that, and having already lost her father and youngest brother, she guarded her heart from further heartache. So the loss of her older brother and mom was difficult; the loss of her daughter and granddaughter shook her faith; the recent loss of her younger brother saddened her to the end.
Fiercely loyal and protective, Heather chatted with family and friends daily. She has friendships lasting over 50 years and kept in touch with extended family to work on a family tree. Heather did not mince words so you knew exactly where you stood with her. But she also had an endearing manner and a wonderful sense of humour which drew people in. When she gave you her ‘smile’ you knew you had a friend for life.
Heather had a special place in her heart for Irene, who she thought of as a sister, Moya & Bob and their boys, who she thought of as family, and her nieces and nephews, who she thought of often. Her son, Ken, daughter-in-law, Susan, and grandchildren Ariella, Jesse, Cody and Gina will miss her bunches…
A memorial service for Heather will be held Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 1:30 pm from the Peace Lutheran Church in Fort St. John, BC. There will be a fellowship following the service.
A Tribute Account has been set up at the BC Cancer Foundation, with all donations forwarded to the PG Centre for the North. Please note donations “In Memory of Hilda Heather Gilmour”.
