Glendon Howard Atwood
August 6, 1936, to February 2, 2019
Glendon Howard Atwood was born in Yarmouth Hospital, Nova Scotia, on August 6 to Willis Henry Atwood and Florence Annie (Rose) Atwood, the third of three children. The family home was in Hebron, backing onto Doctor’s Lake, but Glen’s father passed when he was five years old, and the family also lived in homes around Yarmouth County where his mother taught in local schools. Florence later married Willis Bain of Hebron. At age seventeen Glen earned a scholarship to Acadia University where he received his degree in civil engineering. He started his career in Halifax and soon relocated to Flin Flon, Manitoba, with his first wife Anne McKenzie, but returned to Yarmouth after she passed in childbirth. In 1962 he met and married Janet Mary Cox in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland. Their first two children, Phillip and Peter, were born in Halifax, and in 1965 Glen joined Transport Canada and moved to Ottawa where his son Mark and daughter Karen were born. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1979 where Glen managed the maintenance and construction of airports across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwestern Ontario, Nunavut, and eastern Northwest Territories until his retirement from Transport Canada in 1992. Glen’s faith was a mainstay of his life, and he ministered as a deacon in every church he attended, Bethany Baptist in Ottawa, Trinity Baptist and Saint Vital Baptist in Winnipeg, and Hebron Baptist Church in Hebron. He served on the boards of directors of the Baptist conventions of Ontario and Quebec, Western Canada, and Atlantic Canada. He also served as president of the Yarmouth Baptist Association, as a director of the Atlantic Baptist Foundation, and was a member of the Canadian Bible Society throughout his life. He was an avid sailor, built four boats including two sailboats, and kept active outdoors with jogging, cycling, and camping. In 1994 and again the next year, he traveled to Nepal where he trekked in the Himalayas, including to the base of Mount Everest. He kept a workshop all his life, which served his enthusiasms for woodworking and recycling, and he always maintained a passion for poetry. On his retirement, Glen and Janet moved back to the Yarmouth area where they built their home on Session Hill in Dayton. During his retirement, Glen was a leader in his church and community and served on the boards of directors for Wastecheck Nova Scotia and for the Yarmouth Airport Authority. He is survived by wife, Janet Mary Atwood; daughter Karen Mary Elizabeth Atwood; sons Phillip Gordon Atwood, Peter James (Mavourneen Mooney) Atwood, and Mark Howard (Stephanie Lynch) Atwood; brother Gilbert Ashley Atwood; sister Eleanor Rose Henderson; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
