Gertie Elizabeth Barrett
September 21, 1938 – February 21, 2019
Passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Gertie Elizabeth Barrett nee, Layden of Lewisporte.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jellicoe; daughter, Emma and sons, Chesley and Jerry. Left to mourn with loving memories are her daughter, Colleen (Carl); grandchildren, Nicole (Michael), Stephanie (Shane), Jeffrey and Adam; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Dana and Violet; brothers, Sidney (Irene) and Abner (Fay); sisters, Jane, Effie (Albert) and Alma; sister-in-law, Rita; brother-in-law, Lloyd; best friend, Martha (Llewellyn) who was like a sister to her and a large circle of other relatives and friends.
Gertie had a talent for being crafty and her quilts, mittens and socks have kept people warm all over the world. She also had a deep love of the outdoors and was the happiest while casting for a salmon, picking berries or ski-dooing to a boil up in the woods. She also had a passion for helping others. Volunteering with both the Canadian Red Cross and Canadian Blood Services, she spent over 50 years organizing blood donor clinics and other events in her community. She was an early member of the Newfoundland chapter of the Canadian Hemophilia Society and she collected for a number of charities.
Although Gertie loved flowers, she believed they were best left in a garden for everyone to enjoy. Instead, to honor her memory, give a helping hand to someone else, become a blood donor or give a donation to her favorite charity, the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of the Canadian Hemophilia Society.
Public visitation will take place from Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, 262 Main Street, Lewisporte on Saturday, February 23rd from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. The Funeral Service will take place from St. Matthews United Church, Lewisporte on Sunday, February 24th at 2 PM. Interment will follow from the United Church Cemetery.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Gertie Elizabeth Barrett September 21 1938 February 21 2019..
