« I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me… » 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NKJV)
With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to our dearest Grandmother, Mother, Wife, Sister, Aunt and Friend, Annamma (Anna) Oommen, who was welcomed to her eternal home on Jan 28th at the age of 80 years old. Anna was born on Mar 18th, 1938 as the first born child of late Mariamma and C. M. Thomas (Cheenkayil House, Pazhavangadi P.O., Ranny, Kerala). She leaves behind her most loving and devoted husband Babu Oommen, children Mercy George (Johnson), Sam Oommen (Leslie) and Nancy Oommen, as well as her beloved grandchildren Andrew, Michael, Josiah, Mikayla, Sophia, and Micah. Anna is survived by her siblings Ammini Joseph (M. K. Joseph), Thomas Mathew (Leelamma), Pr. Abraham Thomas (Valsa), and Leelamma Iype (Babu) and their families.
Anna left home at the age of 17 to pursue a career in nursing and went on to work in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain for a period of 9 years. Even though she was away from her family, she was always mindful of their welfare and stepped up to assist them when financial challenges arose. Her career led her to relocate to London (England), where she married Babu Oommen on Aug 6th, 1966. They immigrated to Canada in 1968 and decided to settle in Winnipeg, MB where they raised their young family. Even though they did not know anyone when they moved to Winnipeg, they made some lifelong friends there. Anna attended Grace Chapel for over 32 years, where she and her husband served in various capacities. She loved her church community and enjoyed hosting and organizing dinner parties at home. Their home was a place of constant hospitality, largely due to Anna’s lively personality and gift of encouragement. Anna had suffered with her share of health issues, but it never stopped her from enjoying friendships and doing the things she loved.
In the year 2000, Anna retired and relocated to warmer weather in Hamilton, ON. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, and continued to do so, even in retirement. They made many new friends in Hamilton, who they have come to love and cherish, especially through involvement at West Fifth Bible Chapel and Hamilton Prayer Group. We celebrate the life God gave Anna to live. She lived it fully with no regrets. Anna’s absence leaves a big hole in our hearts. Our hope is in knowing she is with her Saviour whom she loved and served, and we will see her soon.
A time of visitation will be held at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church (61 Mohawk Rd W, Hamilton, ON L9C 1V9) on Saturday, February 9th from 2:00pm – 5:00pm, followed by Family Sharing from 5:00pm – 6:30pm. Funeral will be held at the same location on Monday, February 11th at 10:30am. Burial to follow at Mount Hamilton Cemetery. A time of fellowship and light refreshments will be available following the burial at West Fifth Bible Chapel (440 West 5th Street, Hamilton, ON). Online condolences may be made at www.baygardens.ca
