Alice Marguerite (Pratt) Goodeve of West Vancouver, passed away December 23, 2018 at Lion’s Gate Hospital after a brief illness. She was 92 years old.
Alice was born December 9, 1926 in Montreal to parents Ernest Ivens Pratt and Irene Slater (LePage) Pratt. She had two older siblings – Mildred (Allen) and Arthur Pratt. The young family tragically lost their mother Irene at an early age, a loss from which Alice never quite recovered. Ernest remarried Dorothy (Dolly) Fox in 1929.
Alice was a true Montrealer who loved the city fiercely and had a large network of family, friends and neighbours. She had cousins in Quebec’s Eastern Townships and spoke fondly of them, her maternal grandparents and summers spent ambling about in the Quebec countryside.
While Alice didn’t have a lot of formal education, she had life skills and experience. She entered the workforce at an early age to help support her family after her father was forced to stop working due to health issues that lingered after his time in the World War One trenches.
Over her career years, Alice worked in medical offices and in nursing in Montreal. She had an international adventure working in London where she lived and travelled with her girlfriends Alwyn and Edna. The three had wonderful times together and remained life-long friends. Alwyn recalled how they would let Alice be the front woman when hitchhiking in Europe because her good looks would stop traffic in no time.
Alice had a long bachelorette-hood but on November 29, 1958, married Arthur George Goodeve in Montreal. In 1961, the couple welcomed their first child and only son, Henry Philip Goodeve. In quick succession came Susan Alice (Martin) Goodeve in 1962 and Anne Georgina (Yungwirth) Goodeve in 1963. A few years later, Alice bore the family’s fourth and final child, Victoria Beryl (Noble) Goodeve in 1967.
The family relocated from Montreal to Toronto just prior to Victoria’s birth and remained living on Stibbard Avenue in Toronto until 1978. At that time, George’s work moved the family to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where they lived on Saskatchewan Crescent West.
In 1985, after all their children were finished public school and were either at or finished university, Alice and George retired to Victoria, BC. From their home on Rockland Avenue, they were able to spend their retirement years gardening, travelling, socializing with friends old and new, and welcoming their children and growing brood of grandchildren for visits. In total, Alice had 11 grandchildren: Robert and William Goodeve; Erica, Evelyn and Adam Martin; Sarah, Emily and Megan Yungwirth; and Nicholas, Justin and Jaimie Noble.
The Goodeves lost George in 2005 and Alice relocated to the Amica West Vancouver in 2013. She enjoyed the Amica community and her daughters, who all live in Metro Vancouver with their families, loved having her close by for frequent visits. Philip, of Tampa, Florida, also visited with his sons as often as he could.
Alice will be remembered for her humour, quirky personality, fierce family loyalty, and gentle nature. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
