Sigrid passed away peacefully on January 10, 2019, in Beaver Falls, BC, in the embrace of her family’s love. She died in the house where she and her husband Hans lived for over 60 years, creating a loving and supportive home for themselves and their six children. She was kind-hearted and caring, humble and self-effacing, but had a deep reservoir of courage and strength that saw her through the many challenges she faced over the course of her 89 years of life. Sigrid was a wonderful mother, grandmother (Oma), wife, sister and friend, and she enriched the lives of those around her with her warmth, her generous spirit and her laughter.
She was born in Horka, a small village in eastern Germany, to her parents Alfred and Frieda Seifert. Later, Sigrid and her mother and siblings were forced to flee their home as the Red Army advanced through Poland. At the war’s end, they found themselves in the small town of Neckarsteinach near Heidelberg, where she later married Hans Koerber. Their first child, Karl, was born in 1949. They emigrated to Canada in the early 1950s, where Hans found employment as a machinist in Trail, BC.
The family lived in East Trail for a few years before buying a “fixer-upper” on seventy acres in Beaver Falls that became the long-time family home. There young Hans was born in 1955, followed by Rosemarie, Irene, Ralph and, finally, Norm in 1966. While the kids were still young, Sigrid was a full-time mom and homemaker but, once the children were a bit older, she found employment with Canada Post in Trail, where she worked until she and Hans retired in 1982.
In their retirement years the couple enjoyed travelling, including several trips back to Germany to visit their families there. After Hans died in 2000, Sigrid remained in the Beaver Falls house, tending her garden, going for walks, getting together with friends and enjoying visits from her children and her many grandchildren.
She is survived by children Karl (Ann Harvey), Hans (Loren), Rosemarie Millett (Carl), Irene Haas (Lorne), Ralph (Debbie), Norm; sister Inge Schwartz, brother Reinhardt Seifert (Marianne), 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, and predeceased by her husband Hans and daughter-in-law Rita Koerber.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the kind and compassionate care provided to Sigrid by the staff of IHA Home Health. The family is especially grateful to Dr. Elizabeth McCoid, as well as April Cashman of April’s Caregiving for Seniors and her wonderful staff for the loving care and companionship they provided for Sigrid during her last years.
As an expression of sympathy memorial donations made in Sigrid’s name to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
A private family service has been entrusted with Gwen Ziprick of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Sigrid Koerber January 10th 2019..
