Roland Sidney Winsor
November 11, 1921 – September 27, 2018
It is with sad hearts, yet with a shout of Victory, that the family of the late Sidney Roland Winsor announces his passing. Roland “Uncle Rollie” was promoted from this earth to Glory on Thursday September 27, 2018 from the Valley Vista Seniors Citizens Complex, at the wonderful age of 96 years.
« I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. » 2 Timothy 4:7
Roland was born on November 11, 1921, in Triton, NL the firstborn of Arthur and Fanny Winsor. He married Marie Gladys Wiseman on April 23, 1947. He survived cancer in 1983 and experienced better health in the next 30 years on ¼ of his original stomach than he did the 20 years or so before.
Roland was a lifelong fisherman and fished lobster (with the assistance of his youngest son, Glen, in his latter years) until the age of 90. His livelihood as a fisherman was supplemented with moose and rabbit hunting as well as the local farm garden, the keeping of sheep and a horse as was the tradition of the day. His favored partner for fishing, working in the garden or cutting wood was his loving wife Marie.
Roland fought for his Country during the second world war by serving in the British Navy for 4 ½ years getting home only once to visit his family. His travel on the battleships; HMS Warspite, and the HMS Resolution and the aircraft carrier; HMS Queen took him to most continents and oceans on the globe. Roland loved to share stories of his times in the British Navy, especially to school students around Armistice Day, but never about the battles he was engaged in or impacts they may have had upon him. « He often spoke of the distinctive British Navy Ceremony and showed the certificate of being shaved by Neptune, the mythical god of the sea, when he crossed the equator for the first time. »
Roland was a generous, compassionate, humble and loving man both of family and the people of his community broadly. His happiest times was to be in his home surrounded by his sons and daughters and their extended families down to the great-great-grandchildren with the telling of stories and jokes and often with himself being the butt of many of the jokes. He was always ready to help anyone in need with a few bucks or a meal of salmon or fish or whatever was the need. He was especially natural and compassionate with personal visits when someone was sick or shut in. His care of family and community was perhaps best illustrated by the receipt of sometimes over a hundred birthday cards and several birthday cakes.
He loved his Lord and his Church and he shared the great hope of eternal life. Therein is our comfort and peace in his passing. We know he is looking forward to seeing us all again someday, and we him.
He was welcomed by His Lord, to join his love ones who predeceased him.
Roland was predeceased and welcomed Home by his loving wife Marie Winsor; parents – Arthur and Fanny Winsor; infant daughter – Velma Winsor; brothers – Otto Winsor, Earle Winsor, Steadman Winsor, Ford Winsor, Hedley Winsor; sisters – Hilda Fudge, Bertha Fudge, Thelma Winsor, Celia Winsor; daughter-in-law – Donna Winsor; sister-in-law – Monda Winsor.
He has left to remember the wonderful life that he lived his sons – Randolph (Joyce) Winsor, Durvin (Betty Anne) Winsor, Glen (Dianne) Winsor; daughters – Edna (David) Roberts, Winnie (Lloyd) Hibbs, Katrina (Richard) Kosch; brothers – Warrick (Maxine) Winsor, Cecil (Doreen) Winsor, Roy Winsor; sisters Joan (Boyce) Budgell, Linda (Francis) Verge; grandchildren – Kirk Winsor, Chad Roberts, Coleen Roberts, Philip Winsor, Gareth Winsor, James Winsor, Charlotte Winsor, Jennifer Hill, Jill Roberts. He also has six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, as well as other family members and friends.
Roland was loved by everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed by all, especially by the people of Triton.
« ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness! » Matthew 25:23
