Obituary of Mary Steacy
In her 90th year, after living with ALS, Mary decided to die with dignity, with the help of the caring team at Sunnybrook Hospital. Predeceased by the love of her life, Richard, her brother, Gilbert, and her sister, Margaret, Mary is survived by her two sons, Charles (Karen) and William (Pamela), her three granddaughters Evelyn, Santana, and Ruby, her brother, Edwin and her many nieces and nephews. Born in Saskatchewan, Mary grew up on a rural farm and rode to school in a horse- pulled carriage or sled depending on the season . After moving to rural Ontario with her family, she headed to the big city of Toronto to start her career as an Executive Secretary. She spent many years as a single working woman, dating, dancing, and living with roommates. She married Richard and after the birth of her two boys she became a stay at home mom, and publishing assistant in the home office of Real Estate Press. After Richard’s death she resumed working at Transport Canada where she had many friends. During her retirement years she volunteered at Starlight, kept fit by walking, stayed connected with her church community and travelled to visit family in Kelowna, and with friends to Europe. Mary was very independent her whole life and struggled greatly with the challenges brought on by her disease. Her final days were spent visiting with family and friends, whom she cherished. Donations may be made in her honour to ALS Society of Canada. Visitation will be held at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge St. (at Goulding, south of Steeles) on Thursday, January 30 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral Service in the Chapel on Friday, February 1 at 11am.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Mary
