Marchand, Joseph “Jerry” – January 9, 2019
With the angels singing “Amazing Grace” and surrounded by the warmth of those he loved, Jerry’s 7 year battle with cancer has ended. He has been accepted into the healing arms of the Lord, where he can walk free and shop forever! With his loving parents, Dannie and Mary, Jerry will look down upon us and shine the light of his spirit on those who have been touched by him and will mourn his passing. Through his gaze, a beacon from Heaven shall forever surround his precious family and his amazing and faithful wife of 30 years, Laura (Harris).
Fighting until the end, remaining positive and lending support to other cancer patients, his generosity was never-ending. Jerry died with dignity, the same way he had lived out his 66 years. Loving stepfather to Kerri and Ryan Faulkner, granddad to Bailey and Jordan and Jordan’s moms Jessica and Crystal. He is survived by his siblings Shirley, Don (Giselle), David (Barb) and his niece and nephews.
He retired from Canada Customs after 33 years, serving 5 years as president of the union (CEUDANS). He was an avid volunteer with many different charities. Always putting others first was his motto. He donated blood to the Red Cross 133 times. He enjoyed being a “big brother” for 18 years. Helping to shape many little brothers in their lives. He had a special bond with Braydon Johnson, his longest little brother.
Jerry loved to shop and to cook, every Christmas cooking up at least 5 turkeys and delivering them to the needy. He was a great movie buff and enjoyed giving movies to anyone who knew him. After retirement, he was employed by the Film Board and always joked about being paid to watch movies. He loved being married and loved life itself, as long as Laura was happy, he was happy. He will be missed by his many friends and his weekly coffee buddies especially his best buddy Chummie MacDonald, who picked Jerry up every Thursday morning.
We owe a big gratitude to Dr. Howard Conter and Roslyn, always there when needed and then some. The staff at VG 7a who gave my husband wonderful and compassionate care. To our wonderful friends that have helped so much and did so many selfless acts of kindness and our neighbors Marco and Kathy, who made life a little easier. Thanks to Kerri, for helping to make this transition tolerable.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday, January 15th at 1pm at Steven’s Road United Baptist Church. Online condolences can be made at www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax.
