John Henry Brent passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital on January 2, 2019. He was a patient, along with his wife Mildred Grace Brent, and we wish to thank the kind personnel at St. Paul’s Hospital for arranging for them to share a room so that his wife of 74 years was present when he passed.
John was born October 3, 1926 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He began his working career by delivering telegrams by bicycle for CP Telegram. He then moved to CP Rail, which later became CP Express and later again CP Transport. He became Assistant Terminal Manager in Winnipeg and in 1970 transferred to Saskatoon to become the Terminal Manager, a position he held until retirement.
John met his wife Mildred Grace Brent (Krawchuk) and they married on September 28, 1945.
John is predeceased by his mother Alva Dalsgaard; his stepfather Walter Delsgaard; and his daughter Delores Brent. He is survived by his wife Mildred; son Les Brent (June); daughter Audrey Brent; grandson Jason (Karen); granddaughter Wendy (Mark); and great-grandson Reese.
John was active in the Catholic Church both in Winnipeg and in Saskatoon. In Winnipeg, he was a School Board Trustee in St. Gerard’s Catholic School. He became a Grand Knight of the Order of the Knights of Columbus and was a regular volunteer. He worked Bingos as a fundraiser in order to pay for Catholic education in Winnipeg. In Saskatoon, he was a regular reader and volunteer in Holy Spirit Parish.
John was president of the Nutana Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He served in Essential Services in WWII on airplane maintenance, including planes used by the likes of Winston Churchill and Chiang Kai-Shek.
John is missed by his family, his loved ones, and his friends. You are invited to attend a celebration of his life and interment to be held on Friday, January 11, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home, with Father Rhéal Bussière presiding.
