OBITUARY
Ineke den Hond
December 11, 1941 – December 30, 2018
Ineke den Hond, peacefully left us on December 30, 2018 at 77 years of age to join her maker and beloved mother Wilhelmina (Willy) and father Johannes (John) den Hond.
Ineke was a woman of the world: born in Indonesia, spent her childhood in South America and the Netherlands and arrived to her beloved Port Alberni in 1955. She travelled and worked in BC, Alberta, California and Arizona. She also holidayed in Mexico, Alaska, Australia and Europe.
Ineke had a love of education her entire life. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and History from the University of Victoria. Later she received the English as a Second Language Teaching Certificate and completed the Human Service Worker Program. She also completed Secretarial Courses.
She worked at various hospitals including Col. Belcher Veteran’s Hospital in Calgary and Calgary General Hospital from 1976 – 1984 in the steno pool and Colleges – North Island College and Vancouver Community College, Langara.
She was self employed as a tutor and owner/operator of a gardening company, the « Green Machine » and worked as a substitute teacher. Over the years she volunteered for many organizations such as: North island College ESL Program, Womens’ Resource Centre, Canadian Mental Health Association, New Horizon Housing Association and Cool Waters Housing Association. She stood up when she saw something was wrong and had a talent for bringing people together.
Ineke enjoyed socializing with her many friends from childhood, school years, working years and beyond. Ineke was known for her intelligence, fighting spirit and sense of humor. She overcame many challenges throughout her life. She loved music and singing. Over the years she walked, gardened, played tennis, badminton, wrote poems and stories, painted, panned for gold and especially loved swimming.
We would like to thank the many people who supported her through the years: Dr. Smit, Dr. Croome, Dr. Johnson, Dr. Nell, the nursing staff at the Dialysis Unit, all the staff at Westhaven, Handydart and taxi drivers, Pastor David, and her many friends of which there are too many to mention. A special thanks goes to Marlene Mortensen and Joanna Wright.
She is survived by cousins and their families in the Netherlands and Australia.
Please join us at Ineke’s Celebration of Life at Southside Community Church at 4190 Victoria Drive at 1:30 pm on January 12, 2019.
