In Loving Memory
William (Bill) Alexander Bell died suddenly, but peacefully, at home on Thursday August 30 with his wife Irene by his side.
Bill was born and raised in Port Stanley, Ontario, the son of William and Margaret Bell. During high school Bill excelled at sports, starring in baseball, hockey and track and field. After high school Bill remained in Port Stanley for a number of years working in the boat yards and The Gas Plant before starting his degree at the University of Western Ontario. In 1957 Bill graduated with an Honors Bachelor of Science in Geology.
After graduation Bill moved to Calgary where he worked at a number of oil and gas companies, including Tenneco, Mana Resources, Barnwell and Bonanza Petroleum as Vice President of Exploration. During Bill’s career he was involved in discovering several oil fields in the province of Alberta, including Countess, Lathom, Rockyford and Long Coulee. Bill was also instrumental in the discovery of the Brazo County, Texas oil fields.
Bill was an accomplished geologist and oilman in Calgary whose career spanned over 60 years. He was always looking for the next big discovery. With his long time employee Jeanette by his side, he worked tirelessly to his last day as President of Bellport Resources. Bill always remained a lover of sports. He never tired of playing golf with his daughter Allison or watching a Flames game with his son James.
Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Irene (Walasko) Bell, his son James (Carla) Bell; his daughter Allison (Yogi) Kim and five grandchildren, Colin and Eric Bell and Nicklas, Isabelle and Tyler Kim; sisters-in-law Jean Walasko, Pat Walasko; brother-in-law Jim (Florence) Walasko. He will also be remembered by his nieces and nephews; Rick Redmond, Denise (Paul) Bonner, Cheryl Walasko, Ron Walasko, Barbara (Keith) Ryan and John Walasko.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, William Tankard Bell; his mother Margaret Alice Bell; his sister Beverly Doreen Redmond and his granddaughters Norah and Audrey Bell.
Bill and Irene were prominent philanthropist having generously supported The United Way, The University of Calgary, The University of Western Ontario, The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, The Theatre Company in Port Stanley and numerous other charitable causes.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Eden Brook Funeral Home, corner of 17th Avenue and Lower Springbank Road SW on Tuesday September 4, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at Eden Brooke Funeral Home on Wednesday September 5 at 10:00 a.m.
