Predeceased by his first wife of almost 40 years Wanda (nee Wieczerzak 1989); his parents Ferdinand (Victoria), and parents-in-law Josephine (Jacob) Piskor and Josephine’s first husband Walter Wieczerzak. Dearest father and inspiration to his three children Donna (George) Dykstra, Eddie (Thelma), and Lorraine (John) Korody. Devoted Dziadzi and mentor of Joshua, Kristen (Anthony), Victoria, and Lucas (Laina). Great Dziadzi to Mason. Wonderful step-father to Loisanne (Pete) Scriver, step grandchild Ashley and her son Michael. Cherished brother of Anne (late Walter) Kardas, late Elaine (late Bronsan) Pezanowski, late Joe (late Mary) Blaszynski, John (Elsie) Blaszynski, and Stan (late Kitty) Blair. Also survived by many loving family members, close friends and neighbours.
Walter was born on March 12th, 1923 in Komiowka, Poland. Walter was employed at Union Carbide, then Consumer Gas Company, from where he retired as a district manager from Grimsby Gas until 1985. At the age of 19, during WWII, he joined the Canadian Army and served in the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical and Engineering Unit.
Throughout his life, Walter not only wanted to serve his country, but also help others. Volunteering was always part of his life and he did not understand the meaning of the word « retirement. » He was active with minor hockey and soccer. Walter was deeply involved with the Canadian Polish Society and served four terms as president; member & Past President of Royal Canadian Legion Polish Branch #418 and served on the executive board; member & Past President of Canadian Polish Society; instrumental in the building of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and served as chairman of the building committee to its many renovations and updates. He helped restore the Children’s Discovery Centre and served on its board of directors and was influential in building Polonia Park. Walter was a founding committee member of Niagara Folk Arts Multicultural Centre. Dad loved to watch the Blue Jays and Maple Leafs, and old John Wayne movies. Most of all, he loved his family beyond words and always worked hard to provide for them. He never missed dance recitals, soccer, hockey, baseball games, plays and band concerts. We admired his strength, keen mind, wit and sense of humour. Dad was a « brave soldier » to the end.
Visitation for Mr. Blaszynski will take place at George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton Street on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Vigil prayers will be said in the funeral home at 3 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 5 Oblate Street, on Tuesday at 10 am with burial to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Memorial remembrances to Hospice Niagara or Tender Wishes Foundation.
