Obituary Overview
Forever missed & always remembered
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Vernon A. Taylor of Springhill, NS, on March 25, 2018 surrounded by family members.
Born January 6, 1940, he was the son of the late H. Allison and Frances Taylor of Havelock, NB.
Throughout his life, Vernon surrounded himself with family and friends. At a young age he joined the family business, cutting and hauling pulp with a team of horses. In this environment, Vernon’s outlook on life emerged – hard work, loyal friendships and humorous anecdotes. In a family of 10 there were countless fond memories of telling tales and playing tricks, but he also learned the value of hard work and dedication which Vernon applied to all facets of his life. His commitment to family led him to Eaton’s shoe department where he met his loving wife, Beverley, while purchasing his younger sisters’ new shoes. In 1965 he pursued a career with Corrections Canada, training at Kingston Penitentiary and working at Dorchester and Springhill Institutions. Vernon held various supervisory roles but promoted precision, professionalism, and cohesion while offering mentorship to numerous inmates before retiring after 30 years of service. In his leisure time, Vernon could be found throwing and sweeping rocks at the Springhill Curling Club, a passion which led him to Provincial competitions and club President for two consecutive years. As a father, he dedicated 12 years to Scouts Canada, following his son through Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Vernon volunteered with the Springhill schools long after his children graduated, maintaining a role on the Springhill High School Advisory Council from 1998 until his passing. After his retirement, Vernon served the community of Springhill by assuming the role of Police Commission Chairman. His passion for curling and hockey also remained strong, following his teams and hoping for the unattainable – a Stanley Cup for the Maple Leafs. He was often found enjoying a cup of tea with his Tim’s Crew or occupying a park bench sharing stories. He was extremely proud of his children and dedicated to his three grandchildren.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 58 years Beverley (MacLeod), daughter Jan Taylor (Colin) & granddaughters Violet and Lilah, son Vernon Taylor II (Lesley) & grandson Callum; siblings Ralph (Georgie-Lee), Marguerite Jackson (Gary), Eric (Linda), Shirley Tingley (Gerald), Frank (Pauline), Stuart (Darlene), Harry (Esther), Marlene Middleton (Leigh), Monica Alward (Nelson).
A visitation followed by a celebration of life and reception will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Springhill Baptist Church in the Charter Room at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Vernon’s name to the 2nd Springhill Scouting Group at springhillscouting@outlook.com.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St. Amherst, 902-667-9906.
