Obituary
Valmont Thomas Babin
September 19, 1929 – August 4, 2018
Someone who truly likes and cares for people brings joy to those whose lives he touches. Such a man left us August 4, 2018, just shy of his 89th birthday.
Valmont was born in Charlo, NB to Opal (Landry) and Leo Babin. Husband of Mabel (Wafer) and father of Anne, Peter (Suzanne), Michael (Belinda), Krista (Bruce Turner), and Steven. Grandfather of Jillian (Aaron Keough), Scott (Victoria), Jessie (Monique), Isabelle (Cassidy Frenette), William, and Jennifer. Dad was happy in recent years to open his heart to Annabelle Keough and Nicholas Guitard.
Brother to Albert (Audrey), Rita (Bob Chandler), Beatrice (died age 3), Gilbert (Tiny, Pat), Lloyd (Margery), Doreen (Pius Guitard), Aline (Louis Doucet), Jeanne (Daniel Allain, Donald Wood), Leonard (aka Ben) (Yvette), Hector (Eileen), and Marie (Arnold Fenton).
Jillian, with one of her first words, nicknamed him “Gummie’ and so he was known to many thereafter. His many nieces and nephews were cherished and he was touched when they were happy to see him. He was pleased when the little ones tried to call him by name and tickled when it came out as “Uncle Vammo” or “Uncle Elmo”.
Dad’s childhood years in the Great Depression left a mark as it did for so many who lived through that. He grew into a selfless and compassionate man who was ever willing to shelter, nurture, and mentor, and leaves behind many who hold him dear for it. He could not see a child without wanting to feed it (usually ice cream cones), nor could he ignore an animal in need. He often said “I hate cats” but whenever a stray, especially a beat-up one, showed up in the yard, he was right out there with milk and food.
Dad was a sociable man. He loved to walk, and he only bought a few groceries at a time. This meant he got to see people more often, and he looked forward very much to those daily excursions.
Dad was self-reliant and active until November, 2017, when he had to step up treatments for prostate cancer that had metastasized widely. He passed away at the Palliative Care Unit at Campbellton. We thank his medical team, especially Dr. MacMillan of whom he thought the world and appreciated.
The family requests that memorial donations be directed to the Haven of Hope, Dalhousie, or the Restigouche SPCA.
The funeral service will take place Wednesday, August 8 at 2pm (open 1:30), followed by a reception, at St-Jean-Batiste church in Dalhousie.
Arrangements in the care of MacMillan’s Funeral Home.
