Obituary for
Stuart Johnson
JOHNSON, McArthur STUART 1926-2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Stuart into the presence of Jesus on Sunday, December 9, 2018 with his family by his side at the Village of Tansley Woods, Burlington. Devoted and loving father to Lorraine (Robert) and Marc (Linh). Adored Grampa of Alexandra, Kira, Jacqueline and Spencer. Loving brother of Dawn Zoppa, Gail (Ray) Kenney and Miriam (Ralph) Greenhow. Special uncle to 25 nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Arthur and Marion (McDougall) Johnson. Stuart was born on December 30, 1926 in Leicester, England and immigrated with his parents to Canada in the Spring of 1927. Stuart grew up in Windsor, ON as the eldest of four children, and attended Walkerville Collegiate where he won numerous awards including first place in the Ontario Rifle Championships. Growing up he enjoyed building boats, airplanes and various contraptions that would sometimes result in loud bangs and smoke emanating from the family home’s basement. Stuart graduated as an Engineer from the Detroit Institute of Technology and attended Queen’s University for business.
Working as an Engineer at Marine Industries in Sorel, Que. Stuart met his wife to be; Fernande (Salvail) who he brought back to Windsor to be married in August 1953. Shortly afterwards, he designed and built their house on the St. Lawrence River in Brockville, where they had two children. He worked for Parke Davis until their children were about to start school, when he moved the family to live closer to schools. First to Mississauga, then to Burlington, where he continued to design and operate manufacturing plants while travelling the world purchasing specialized manufacturing equipment for a wide variety of industries.
Stuart loved the outdoors, and was an avid photographer and sailor who enjoyed racing his sailboat, Waverunner.
He enjoyed music, cooking and eating gourmet food. Stuart enjoyed taking his grandchildren to the Royal Botanical Gardens, fishing and hiking the Bruce Trail, always taking plenty of photos. He was often seen along the sidelines of soccer fields, volleyball courts and dance and music recitals taking photos of his grandchildren. He was Vice President of The Gideons International in Halton. In his later years, Stuart moved to the retirement Village of Tansley Woods where he made treasured friendships and was blessed to meet and enjoy Christian companionship with his dear friend Idena. The two could be seen walking hand in hand after every meal on the trails surrounding Tansley Woods and on Main St. You will be dearly missed dad, by all who knew your caring and thoughtful ways. We love you dearly.
Visitation at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-6323333), on Thursday, December 27 from 12-1 p.m. Immediately following the visitation, a Celebration of Stuart’s life will be held in the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. Reception to follow.
