A Short History of Steve’s Life
Steve, known by his family as“Pisti” (meaning Stevie) was born in Pari, a small village in Hungary, from where he and his family were forced to leave after the war. They were sent to East Germany where starvation prevailed and therefore made plans to escape to West Germany. After 3 years in Kassel, West Germany, Steve’s parents decided their future would be better in Canada and they courageously set sail for Ontario when he was just 11. Sponsored by a school colleague of Steve’s father, the Herrs farmed tobacco in the Strathroy area until they were able to buy their own farm in Port Elgin. Here, Steve started high school and met his future wife, Ruth. When both decided upon a career in teaching, they moved to Owen Sound and taught at West Hill Secondary School. As director in the Business Department, Steve was known for his energetic and enthusiastic leadership. His students will remember him for his very active roles in student council, ski club, activity days, school dances and genuine fun. Steve and Ruth had two children- Steven and Karen, and they remember him for his timeless devotion, enduring support, his never ending love, his great strength and his continuous joy and good nature. As a family, they enjoyed wonderful summers and lasting memories at their cottage in Sherwood Camp on Berford Lake. Steve and Ruth retired together in 1998 and in the following years enjoyed travelling, cycling, skiing, camping and many happy social occasions with family and friends. Steve loved to dance; he was known for his joie de vivre, his geműtlichkeit and his positive, cheerful energy. Steve and Ruth have 4 grandchildren Sebastian, Lucca, Ainsley and Avery. As a grandparent, Opa was always up for some fun, some games and played tirelessly with little ones in spite of their boundless energy.
It was much later that Steve’s activities were curtailed by his progressive illness of Parkinson’s which resulted in his entering of Lee Manor just over 2 years ago. He again faced new trials and adversities with courage, humour, strength and energy. We say goodbye now, to a life well lived and wish him peace in his new dimension. In God’s good care, we now him, entrust.
