La célébration de
Sonia « Toni » Burleton
20 septembre 1939 –
2 novembre 2018
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Toni on Friday, November 2, 2018, at the age of 79. After a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s, she died peacefully with her family by her side.
Toni was passionate about many things, including golf, tennis, long walks in the country, wine, animals, and music. She was an active participant in her church as well as with multiple charitable causes.
With her husband John and the kids in tow, Toni spent much of her time moving around Canada including Senneville, QC, Thunder Bay, ON, Rothesay, NB, Calgary, AB, Vancouver, BC and Oakville, ON before finally settling in Creemore, ON. Toni always created warm, loving homes for the family and made many friends along the way. Throughout her life, she held a special place in her heart for Knowlton QC where she grew up.
As a family we struggled with the Alzheimer’s that took over Toni’s life. We would like to share a poem that portrays our feelings over the last several years.
It’s A Long Goodbye – by Anonymous
She’s leaving me, little by little, I wish she wouldn’t go.
I will be there as long as she needs me. How do I let her know?
I’d like to hold on to the memories, I’d also like to share.
But she’s further away, getting further away. And yet, she’s always there.
It’s a long good-bye, and yet I believe that she can sense us.
So much time between now and then, when it’s time against us.
There are times she almost seems like herself.
Sometimes it’s just a phase. A part of the person I once knew,
and sometimes just a trace.
It’s a long good-bye and still I don’t know just what to say.
There’s so much time between now and then,
because she goes away, a long good-bye.
Tell me how do all the others do it? There’s so much time between now and then.
How do we get through it? It’s a long good-bye.
Devoted wife to the late John Burleton, and sister to Ian Taylor, Toni is lovingly remembered by her children Stephen (Heather), Derek (Isabelle), and Margot, as well as her grandchildren Brendan, Jeremy, Mathieu, and Olivia. The family wishes to give special thanks to Roz, Maria and the rest of the remarkable staff at 147 Elder for their dedicated care and support over the past three years.
Friends may call at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W. (east of the Jane subway) on Thursday, November 8th, from 6 – 9 p.m. A Celebration of Toni’s Life will be held at Turner & Porter on Friday, November 9th at 3 p.m. A reception will follow at 16 Bell Royal Court, Etobicoke, ON, M9A 4G6. For those who wish, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada in Toni’s name will be directed towards Alzheimer research. Friends may visit Toni’s online Book of Memories at www.turnerporter.ca.
