OBITUARY
Sofronio Cuevas Jr.
March 15, 1936 – March 16, 2018
Sofronio was the eldest of three sons, born to Sofronio B. Cuevas Sr. and Eusebia E. Cuevas on March 15, 1936 in Pikit, Cotobato City, Philippines. As a young boy, he attended school at Notre Dame of Cotobato and graduated high school on March 31, 1955. In addition, he also completed the preparatory military training for the Armed Forces of The Philippines, attaining the rank of Lieutenant on March 30, 1955. He then proceeded with training for two more years in the Naval Reserve Officer’s Training Corps and graduated on March 18, 1957.
As a young man, he went to further his studies at the Philippine Maritime Institute Nautical School, where he attained an Associate in Nautical Science and graduated with honours on March 18, 1957. Upon graduation, Sofronio pursued the Seaman’s career as an apprentice-mate in Campania Martima which operated inter-island ferries in the Philippine Islands. After several more years of experience, he applied and got accepted to a Japanese Maritime company based out of Japan, where he attained the rank of Captain in 1974.
Throughout his careers he completed multiple courses, accreditations and awards for safety and performance. Sofronio was continually recognized as one of the most proficient Nautical Officers within the company.
After thirty-two years of service, he retired in 1992. Sofronio immigrated with his family to Vancouver, on June 5, 1993. Sofronio was married to his wife, Rosita R. Cuevas for fifty-seven years.
He leaves behind five children: Rosemarie, Glenn John, Ronald, Michael and Janet.
