Sibyl Jean Brigham Redman was born near Naicam, Saskatchewan August 24, 1928 to Charles Brigham and Margaret Steven Brigham. An adored little sister for Muriel and Margaret. She grew up enjoying the farm and developing a close friendship with Gwen, the little girl that lived across the road. They remained good friends their whole lives. She attended the nearby country school called Home School, and when it was time for high school she first did it by correspondence while living with her sister Margaret, a new teacher in a country school near Margo, Saskatchewan. Not many kids could say their sister corrected their papers! While here in the Robertson School district she met her future husband, Henry Redman. She completed her high school at Briercrest Bible and High School, a boarding school near Moose Jaw. Sibyl and her friends Erna and Audrey started up a trio. They sang in local talent shows and other events. Sibyl also developed a close friendship with Bertha. Not only did they remain friends the rest of their lives, but her family and the Brigham family became good friends. Bertha passed on a number of years ago, but her two brothers are here today!
She married Henry (Hank) on June 12, 1948 in Naicam. Sibyl worked a few different clerical jobs over the years while she and Henry lived in Regina, including for the Saskatchewan government. She was proud she had worked in the Saskatchewan Legislative Building. But one of her favourite jobs seemed to be when she worked at a plumbing firm as a bookkeeper. In 1963 Henry was transferred to Brandon, Manitoba. There Sibyl worked in the library of Brandon University.
After 22 years of Henry working for Canadian Pacific Transport, Sibyl and Henry decided to go into business for themselves, purchasing a Dairy Queen in Creston, British Columbia in 1966. Though they only owned it three years, she spoke fondly of it for the rest of her life. They then purchased Redman Family Shoes and operated it until they took an early retirement. From that point on they spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona. For 30 years! They had a large circle of friends. Be it Mesa, or Creston, they enjoyed golfing, dancing, and playing cards.
Good thing Sibyl liked to cook as Henry loved to put on a party. She always said that she didn’t need a food processor because she had Hank to chop things up. Sibyl also loved to sing, and to the very end could remember the words to all the old tunes, as she called it. They also loved to travel throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Europe. Their church , Redeemer Lutheran Church of Creston was a very important part of their lives.
Henry passed away March 6, 2005. Sibyl forged ahead and sold the house they had built together and became the first resident of Crest View Village. She loved it there and remained there until she became ill in the fall of 2018.
This August Sibyl celebrated her 90th birthday at a party in Crest View which was attended by over 60 friends! Her family wants to give a big thank you to Betty Marzke for arranging such a special day for Sibyl, and her kindness to her this past year. Also, to the Floer family; Dr. Hopkins, nurses and staff of Creston Valley Hospital; and the management and staff of Crest View Village. And, a huge thank you to Juanita Banman, Sibyl’s case worker from Interior Health for going above and beyond the call of duty to help Sibyl during the last 15 months.
Sibyl passed away October 27, 2018 in Creston Valley Hospital after a very difficult last few weeks.
