Shirley Muriel nee Connors Malo 2018

OBITUARY
Shirley Muriel (nee Connors) Malo
February 6, 1931 – November 23, 2018
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Shirley Malo (nee Connors) after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Shirley is pre-deceased by her husband Anthony (Tony) Malo and her parents Cyril and Sadye Connors. Shirley is survived by her children Susan (Cedric Ortiguera) and Peter, as well as her loving grandchildren Caitlyn, Justin, Nellie and Pete Jr. She will be missed by her cousin Lynda Heath, long time best friend Marjorie (Bunny) Warburton, Susan Reid, and by the many dear friends she made along the 87 year journey of life.
From humble beginnings Shirley grew up in Verdun where her early love for dance and basketball blossomed. She went on to graduate from the Montreal School of Nursing, and the McGill Graduate School of Nursing. Shirley enjoyed a successful career at the original Montreal General Hospital, advancing to Head Nurse on the OB-GYN ward, where she kept all the nurses as well as many doctors, on their toes at all times.
After several years at the MGH, Shirley met and married Tony. They were both sports fanatics, and could often be seen at Montreal Alouette football games, or at the forum watching The Canadiens. They were also both highly involved in the Kinsmen and Kinettes, a very active service club in Montreal. They successfully raised two children, with an incredible blend of love and discipline, and unwavering support and encouragement for their kids’ numerous sports and activities. Among her many passions, Shirley loved her springtime vacations in Delray Beach, and grooming her beautiful gardens at home. She was notably an impeccable dresser, always looking sharp and neat for any occasion.
Shirley was never one to sit idle for very long. Retired from nursing and having sent her kids off to school, Shirley began volunteering at the Lachine General and Montreal General Hospitals, assisting in many different departments. At 50 she went back to school at Vanier College, and followed that with a brief stint in the family business.
Along the way, she was affectionately nicknamed “Shirl Baby”, and enjoyed being greeted by young and old with a “How are ya Shirl Baby?”. But most will recall that you always knew where you stood with Shirley, and that she was a proud woman of conviction who was never afraid to speak her mind. Shirley was a woman with a very kind heart, and throughout her life was motivated to help people.
We would like to thank the many caregivers, friends and neighbours who helped care for Shirley over the years. In particular, we are grateful to Dr. Paul Lysy and the staff at Chateau Westmount, and neighbours Ken and Louise, and Peter and Barbara. A most special and heartfelt thank you goes to Janet Herridge, who compassionately provided care and companionship for over 12 years.
Visitation will take place __________ followed by a funeral service___________. In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to make a charitable donation to the Alzheimer’s Association of Canada, The Montreal General Hospital Foundation, or to a charity of your choice.
Rest in peace Mom….we love you, and will miss you always
