Shirley Mae Schwartz
Shirley Mae Schwartz (nee Lyngstad) passed away peacefully on February 28, 2018 at the Cypress House in Swift Current in her 80th year.
Shirley was the first child born to Knut and Cora Lyngstad on June 11, 1937 at Herbert Saskatchewan. Shirley attend Luxor School in Neidpath and lived with her Grandmother Mattie Simonson during the school year; she spent her summers on the family homestead in the Neidpath area.
The family moved in to Swift Current in 1952 so the children could attend high school. She graduated from Swift Current Collegiate Institute in 1955 and married Cecil Schwartz in November of that year. She worked at Kiddie Land, the Bank of Nova Scotia and later as a care aid in the Swift Current Hospital. In 1956 they moved out to Shirley’s family farm where they operated a grain and cattle operation.
Shirley was active with the Church in Burnham and Neidpath and was a dedicated member of the United Church Women’s group. She played an active role in all community events such as planning and cooking for school functions, church events, fowl suppers and anything else where she could make a contribution.
Shirley was a truly remarkable farm wife. She was from an era which no longer exists where she raised chickens, milked cows, hauled grain and grew a big garden. All of this while she raised 5 children and took them to events, clubs, school functions and sports; she never complained.
Shirley’s home was always open to anyone regardless of who they were. Anyone happening by the farm would be invited in for a cup of egg coffee, maybe a piece of lefse, perhaps a homemade bun or a piece of chocolate cake with caramel icing. She was a truly beautiful person with special appreciation for children the elderly and animals. Neighbors appreciated her happy, wholesome nature and children adored her. Shirley had a great memory for birthdays and anniversaries. She made sure to call family, friends and neighbors to wish them well on their special days. She took joy in bringing pleasure to others. Shirley and Cecil retired from farming in 2004 and rented out their land. They split their time between their acreage near Swift Current and the family farm. In 2015, with failing health, they moved to The Bentley and later to Cypress House where new friendships were made. She appreciated both residents and staff and spoke highly of them all.
Shirley is predeceased by her father Knut Lyngstad (1981) and her mother Cora Lyngstad (2008). She is survived by her husband Cecil; 5 children, Lynda (Dennis) Bulani, Bonnie (Rob) Mather, Clay (Tammy) Schwartz, Shawna (Dwight) Klassen and Lon (Carine) Schwartz; a brother, Sherman (Doreen) Lyngstad and their children Michael (Nicole) Lyngstad and Chrissy Lyngstad. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
The funeral service was held Tuesday March 6, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. from the St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Greg Kiel officiating. The organist was Arlie Neufeld, the eulogist was Chelsea Norheim and the ushers were Tammy Schwartz and Chrissy Lyngstad. The honorary pallbearers were Roland and Phylis Weinz, Greg Targerson and Bob Corey, and the pallbearers were Jace Klassen, Matt Klassen, Michael Lyngstad, Ryan Busse, Steven Deobald and Ethan Ross. The interment service was held at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In Shirley’s memory, donations may be made to The Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation Inc., 1 345 3rd Avenue South, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan S7K 1M6.
