Ruth’s Life Story
Ruth Margaret Bourque
1928-2018
Ruth Margaret Macnamara was born August 9th, 1928 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hamilton to Rachel (Watt) and John Macnamara. Ruth’s father operated the Macnamara Hat Shop on Main Street and retired as owner of the Slater Lumber Co. in Waterdown. Ruth attended Victoria Avenue Public School, Central Collegiate and McMaster University. She cut short her university studies to enter the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, but this was sadly cut short due to illness. She then took a position with Dr. Barney Marsales, an Osteopath, and was employed there until her marriage in 1953.
She was an active member of First United Church, Hamilton and served as president of the Mission Circle. Ontario president of the Theta Kappa Sigma Sorority, and active member of the Big Sister Association (Shields Group) and served on the Board, a member of the Newman Alumni Association and was also an active member of the Hamilton Pharmacist’s Association.
Her chosen vocation was to be a good wife and used all her skill and talents to be the best wife, mother and friend she could be. Ruth was never amused when someone referred to her activity as a “housewife” and over her whole life she gave a meaning and purpose to her role as head of the Bourque household. There was no task that came her way that did not receive the ultimate in attention down to the very last detail, whether it was sewing a dress for herself or her daughter, costumes for her grandchildren, luncheons, dinners, anniversaries, birthdays or special benefit parties. She had a special talent in the preparation of food always knowing instinctively the taste and suitability of any dish for any occasion. Her family was her life. She made an imprint in a gentle and loving way on the many lives she touched, friends especially. Her home was her castle and a perfect example of her creative design and planning were Braemar and the home in Dwight which she liked to call Braemar North. The Naples condo although modest in size was a tribute to her ability to make it a very special winter home for 22 years.
She is survived by her daughter Susan Wigle and husband John, children Rachel and Kate of Hamilton, her son Bill and wife Ann Marie, children Meghan, Sarah, Trent, and Brendan of Burlington, son Paul and wife Beverly, children Sylvie, Will, and Natalie of Calgary, and her son Robert, children Matthew and Emily of Ancaster.
