OBITUARY
Roy Allen Hawkins
September 1, 1936 – March 9, 2018
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of longtime Kelowna resident, Roy Hawkins, who on March 9th, 2018, lost his battle with cancer. Roy was born on September 1, 1936 in Gilbert Plains Manitoba and moved to Kelowna in 1942 with his family, growing up in the Mission living on the lake. Roy is survived by his best friend and wife, Hellen, as well as their two sons Allen and Rick, Rick’s wife Berna, and four grandchildren, Eric, Devin, Kala and Chantelle.
He was an avid outdoorsman and spent a number of years as a Scout Leader in the mission. Roy loved activities such as hunting, fishing, playing golf, throwing horseshoes, racquetball and curling. In his younger days, he was a skilled fastball player. Roy worked for many years as a mechanic at Chapmans Transport followed by Kelowna Ready Mix and once he was done twisting wrenches and smashing knuckles, he took an Instructor job at Okanagan College.
Roy and Hellen loved to travel and went on many adventures together. Both Hellen and Roy retired in 1996, but then Roy went back to school and completed the RV Course. After that, they started to travel south and spent their winters in the warm climate of Southern California. Summers since 1968 were spent at their beach lot on the Westside by the old Ferry Dock where their children and grandchildren enjoyed the sand and water.
Roy was very meticulous with his toys, from his first truck that he had for more than 20 years, to the ski/fishing boat that he had for 39 years. At this time, there are no plans for any formal ceremony but there will be a celebration of life, which is being planned for sometime this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in his name to the charity of your choice.
