Obituary Overview
Rose “Gertrude” Bishoff (nee Wittenberg)
On Thursday, August 2, 2018, peacefully, at Concordia Place in Winnipeg, at the age of 85.
Gertrude was predeceased by her husband Richard (February 1, 1998), parents Ferdinand & Johanna, brother Henry (died in infancy), brother Clarence (drowned age 11), brother Alfred, nephew & Godson Raymond.
She leaves behind her only daughter Caroline, grandsons Eric & Brett, sister Ida (Gerry), and brother Edmund (Edith).
Gertrude was born on February 15, 1933, in a small one-room farm-house located on the property called NE Sec. 28-12-11E, in the Municipality of Whitemouth, Manitoba. The family moved a short distance to a large busy farm, where Gertrude became the “hard-working farm-girl” she remained throughout life. She attended Oldenburg School, a one-room school-house with one teacher, where she enjoyed playing sports with the boys and excelled in math.
In her early twenties, Gertrude moved to Winnipeg to take a sewing course, a passion of hers that would last her lifetime. She found work in a small jewellery store, where she developed a love for fine jewellery, and she worked in retail jewellery until she retired. She shared many fond memories of those early years living in Winnipeg with her brother Alfred.
Gertrude married Richard on August 19, 1961 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Winnipeg, where she remained a faithful member throughout her life. She became involved in the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) and continued until she was unable. In younger years, she enjoyed attending LWML conventions in other cities, and she made some lifelong friendships with some members.
Her main hobbies included sewing, needlepoint, and quilting; she made some amazing quilts in her lifetime. She had a deep love for the farm life. Although she lived in Winnipeg, she always returned to the farm to help her mother with gardening and yearly housecleaning. Gertrude enjoyed tending a vegetable garden, and she couldn’t walk by a weed without plucking it. She also enjoyed canning and freezing the ‘fruits of her labour’.
Special thanks to those who looked after Gertrude during her last years; Cindy and Paul Zechel, Edith Wittenberg, and the staff at Concordia Place.
In keeping with Gertrude’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A service will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 59 Academy Road located on the corner of Wellington Crescent & Academy Road, on Saturday, August 25, at 11:30am.
