Ronald Leslie Philp
RONALD LESLIE PHILP; It is with great sadness that the family of Ronald L. Philp announces his peaceful passing on December 26, 2017, at the Cypress Regional Hospital. Born 85 years ago, on March 27, 1932 to Robert and Martha Philp of Waldeck, SK, he was the second youngest of 5 boys. Ron grew up on the family farm and attended school in Waldeck and graduated from Beattie Collegiate in Swift Current. Swift Current would become his lifelong home. Ron enjoyed a lengthy career with Pioneer Co-op, eventually retiring after serving for many years as manager of the Co-op Lumber division. Ron eventually met the love of his life and on October 9, 1975 he married Hazel Gardiner and with this union he was blessed with an instant, loving family. He also acquired the treasured title of « Grandpa » to Shauna, later joined by Kristina, Crystal, Jeff, Kenton, Brett and Kristen. With great enthusiasm he also became a great grandpa to Tyler, Cody, Austin and Kyle Penner, Chelsea, Jillian and Caden Klys, Kelly, Taylor and Colby Bestrop, Grace, Reno, Grady J Hadley and Blakely Gardiner. And in recent years, great, great grandchildren Liam and Eva Penner made for 5 generations of his family. A tireless volunteer, Ron was still an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56, Kiwanis, the Swift Current Seniors Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Through the years, Ron and Hazel contributed countless volunteer hours to the Swift Current Broncos Hockey Hounds, Meals on Wheels and continued to facilitate Sunday cribbage at the Eagles. Faithfully, every morning, Ron and Hazel started the day with a healthy but competitive game of crib. Ron’s other interests included travelling and camping, especially at Saskatchewan Landing and Cypress Park along with socializing and enjoying morning coffee with friends. He had a special talent with wood and produced many treasured keepsakes. Ron will be sorely missed by Hazel, his loving wife of 42 years; stepchildren Lance (Twyla) Gardiner, DeWayne Gardiner, Jackie Bestrop, Tracy (Laura) Gardiner; 7 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; sisters in law Shirley Philp and Rita Philp as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Ron was predeceased by his parents; brothers Jack and his wife Scotty, Jim and his wife Velma, Alan, and Don; son in law George Bestrop; parents in law Oscar and Mildred Peterson; siblings in law Agnes and Maurice Peltier, Vi and Garnet King as well as other extended family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56 Building Fund or the charity of one’s choice. A Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall at 1910 S. Service Road in Swift Current on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 2:00 PM with Shirley Wilson officiating. The interment service took place at Hillcrest Cemetery. Warren’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
