SMITH, Richard Lionel
Age 83, of Lower Sackville, passed away after a very courageous struggle with multiple health issues for many years in the QEII Health Sciences Centre on December 29, 2018. Born in Toronto Ontario 1935, he was the son of the late Ernest and Ada Smith. Richard, “Dick” as he was affectionately known, retired from the Canadian Armed Forces Navy in around 1991. He loved to go to his cottage with his wife, Florence and family for 48 years in East Petpeswick. He loved to read, solve puzzles, especially the cryptoquote and crosswords in the paper and always enjoyed improving his knowledge of life. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his sons, Daniel, Vancouver, BC, Rick (Karen), Lower Sackville, Mel Chapman (Irene), Tsawwassen, BC; grandchildren, Nicholas and Benjamin, Lower Sackville, Paul Chapman (Leah), Michael Chapman (Nicole) and Steven Chapman (Leah); great-grandchildren, Laurel and Greyson Chapman, all of British Columbia; brothers, Roland (Gert), St. Stephen, NB, Roy, Roger (Bonnie), Randy; sisters, Linda (Bob Fleury), Faye (Bruce), Dorothy (Bill), Deborah, all of ON; many nieces, nephews and extended family. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Florence (Chapman), his brothers, Jack (Shirley), Ron (Noreen); sister, Marlene (Gerald). A special thank you to the staff of Cobequid Community Health Centre and QEII for their care and compassion. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 4 from 6-8 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, January 5 at 11 a.m. in St. Francis By The Lakes Anglican Church, 192 First Lake Drive, Lower Sackville with a reception to follow in the church hall. Interment, Monday, January 7 at 11 a.m. in Oakridge Memorial Gardens, 1078 Old Sackville Road. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Francis By The Lakes Student Music Fund would be appreciated.
