RHODA MARY (HICKEY) WINTON
June 30, 1923 – April 14, 2018
Rhoda Mary (Hickey) Winton passed away peacefully at the Dalhousie Nursing Home surrounded by her family on April 14, 2018 at the age of 94.
She was born to Alexander and Clara (Landry) Hickey. She is survived by her husband of 75 years, Robert (Bert) and her two sons, Arthur (Sharon) of Belledune, NB, and David (Donna) of Dalhousie, NB; six grandchildren, Mary McCann, Amanda Bursey (Alistair), Emily Winton, Laura Galić (Mark), Bonnie Winton (Andrew Russell), and Alexander Winton (Erin MacNeil); two great-grandsons, John McCann & Clark Bursey and many nieces and nephews.
Rhoda was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her sisters, Mildred (Phil Cyr), Hilda (Freeman Watson), Gertrude (Arthur MacMillan), Amanda Hickey, Beatrice (Victor Furlotte), and Myrtle (Arthur Arseneault); four brothers, Msgr. Raymond, Father Augustin, Delphis (Eva), and Arthur (Ada).
Rhoda was a teacher in a one-room school house in Archibald Settlement and then devoted the rest of her life to building the family business, beginning with assisting with the lumber yard and sawmill to MacMillan’s Retail and finally Winton’s Building Supplies. You would often find her sitting in her office adding up the daily ledgers and balancing the books.
She loved a good game of cards—particularly Auction 45 and was often heard bidding 30 for 60 even though her hand could not justify that bid! She loved baseball and hockey and just simply being a grandma to her grandchildren.
She played the piano with a passion and could always be found entertaining for social functions or at home and at the family cottage.
A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at the Dalhousie Nursing Home and the Campbellton Regional Hospital. Your care and compassion at this time will never be forgotten.
As the family wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. Plans for a graveside ceremony and celebration of life will be held once her life partner joins her and they can be laid to rest together.
