REMPEL, John H. (Hans)
December 15, 1925 — October 7, 2018
John H. (Hans) Rempel entered the Gates of Heaven peacefully at a care center in Kelowna B.C. on October 7th, 2018 at the ripe old age of 92. He was born on December 15, 1925 in the village of Nikolaipol, Ukraine (Soviet Union). After surviving the ruthless Communist regime and the Second World War, he, along with his family, was blessed to immigrate and Canada in 1948. He was quickly absorbed into the Mennonite Community in Calgary, making many lifelong friends. It is also where he met the love of his life, Kathe Hamm, while attending English classes. After working hard in the construction trade, he established himself as a successful homebuilder providing a secure and loving home for his wife and three children. He was known for his integrity and generosity in spite of being exceedingly frugal at home. After moving to Kelowna and retiring, he wrote a book containing his memoirs, so his children and grandchildren would have a record of his most remarkable life. He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Kathe, his children: Victor (Marcia), Karen, and Elsie; his grandchildren, Becci (Martin) Thouin, Christine Rempel, Amy (Russel) Green, Daniel (Nicole) Engel, and Patrice Engel and 3 great grandchildren; Alexia, Niko, and Luca Thouin. He is also survived by his three siblings: Helen Isaac, Gretel Funk and Henry Rempel. A celebration of his precious life will be held on Saturday, October 13th at 4:00 pm at the First Mennonite Church, 1305 Gordon Dr., Kelowna, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kelowna’s Gospel Mission www.kelownagospelmission.ca or Kelowna Hospice House, www.hospicecoha.org.
