Obituary for
Raymond Gibbs
GIBBS, Raymond William – Passed away on Monday, July 9th, 2018 at home. Ray was born October 29th, 1945, in Hamilton, Ontario. As the son of a customs official, he was raised in border towns across Ontario. Sault Saint Marie was where he felt most at home; « The Soo » is where he met his beloved wife Shirley, and where they married in 1967. Ray was passionate about social issues and chose to make his difference in the world by becoming a high school English teacher, eventually becoming a widely respected expert in Special Education. A craftsman at heart, Ray’s home was constantly under construction as he painstakingly completed each and every detail to his own higt standards. He took some time from teaching to found and run Maplewynds Custom Homes before returning to his calling in the classroom. Ray spent much of his career at College Heights in Guelph where he eventually became Head of Special Education, he then moved to Centennial Collegiate Vocational School. He retired from the Upper Grand District School Board as a Special Education Consultant. Ray valued family above all else and will be sorely missed by his wife Shirley; he will be sadly missed by his son Fraser and daughter-in-law Kat, his son Jason, and his grandchildren: Jennifer, Peter, Katelyin, Wickham, Delsin and Queelin. He is predeceased by his daughter Jordanna. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Canada would be welcomed by the family. The MS Society is a charity Ray supported following the diagnosis and early death of his daughter Jordanna. A celebration of life will be planned for a future date.
