Raymond Earl Cain
Raymond Earl Cain, September 3, 1926 – November 14, 2018.
Ray passed away peacefully with family at his side on November 14, 2018.
Born in Calgary, Alberta, middle child of John (Patrick) and Hilda (Evelyn) Soll.
Ray grew up in Burnaby where he met the love of his life, Esther Marquardt and they married in 1953. Inseparable – the epitome of Soul-Mates.
Ray enjoyed a varied career from CPR Ships to selling Real Estate. Eventually, with Esther, they owned The 88 Cent Variety Store in Burnaby Heights.
Always a people person: quick to smile, innately friendly; he held a genuine interest for those he met along the way. Lucky enough to be youthful in looks, and spirit.
Ray was passionate about the outdoors: walking in the woods, hiking … mostly for the fun, but also the challenge. His love for camping and hiking started young with brothers Norm and Vernon. Later, his children benefited from this enthusiasm and together they explored many areas of the Pacific Northwest.
Always an avid observer of nature and (often, even correct) predictor of the weather. Ray and Esther created their beautiful garden with a collection of plants gathered from all over – he respected and enjoyed the birds and wildlife who lived there.
Ray visited many places with Esther, but nothing compared to his favourite spot: the remote cabin they built on Timothy Lake, B.C.
This Appreciation of Nature is certainly his Legacy, and a cherished gift to all of us.
Ray’s optimistic spirit will always be remembered by many – especially his love, Esther; his sons: David (Rosemary), Steven (Deborah); daughter, Marie (Linda); his grandchildren: Alex (Kristin), Mack (Tamara), Jennifer (Gontran), Ashley (Shaun), Andrea (Bill) , Amy (Trefor), Jessie, and Meghan (Ben); two great-grandsons: Atlas and James, and his brother, Norm (Flo). Ray is predeceased by his brother, Vernon, and his parents.
Ray’s family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation for the excellent care given by Dr. McAnulty. Warm thanks are due, as well, to the Staff of the Finnish Manor.
In lieu of flowers we ask that you honour Ray’s memory by taking a break to appreciate the mountains, by walking in nature – or by supporting a cause close to your heart.
