It is with heavy hearts that we wish to announce the passing of Peter Greif – beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. Pete passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home, with many family members at his side during his last hours. He was 85 years old.
Pete was welcomed into Heaven by his mother, Catherine Greif (nee Ripplinger) and father, Peter Greif; his infant sister Annie Marie Greif; infant daughter Joanne; infant son Jackie Michael; and his special aunt Mary Charette.
He is survived by his wife Cecelia (Syl) Greif (nee Herauf); six children: Peter Greif (Lynn), Terry Carlson (Wade), Harvey Greif (Donna), Robert Greif (Maria), Kathy Syrnyk (James) and Wendy Gauthier (David); two sisters Rosalie Grad and Patricia Greif; special cousin Florence Blaise (Ed); sixteen grandchildren: Chris Greif (Anna), Ashley Greif (fiancé Justin), Geoffrey Greif (Breanna), Melanie Pope (Ryan), Tyler Carlson (Victoria), Chad Greif, Jay Greif (Crystal), Teresa Greif (fiancé Will), Christina Greif, Anthony Greif, Matthew Syrnyk, Zachary Syrnyk, Rachel Syrnyk, Henricus Gielis (Gina), Marcus Gielis (Amy) and Anneliese Gielis; eight great grandchildren: Elara Trischuk, Ethan Greif, Emmett Pope, Elliott Pope, Gabrielle Laferte, Damon Greif-Youngblut, Gage Langman and Jackson Trevena; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Pete was born on September 18, 1932.
He resided in Regina, SK. He attended St. Augustine Elementary School and Balfour Technical Collegiate.
When he was 18, he met Syl, the love of his life. They married when he was 21 years old.
During this time, Pete worked at National Music, repairing accordions and doing office work. He later went to work with his dad at Pete’s Auto Body, where he carried on as an auto body man.
During his working years, Pete and Syl had their family. He had a great affection for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and he loved to tease everyone.
Pete had the most wonderful sense of humour. He was so quick with his wit. Everyone loved to hear what Pete was going to say next.
Pete had many interests, including landscaping his yard, brick laying and organizing any gadgets he could find. His favouite hobby of all was videoing. He always had the video camera in his hand, creating wonderful family videos for everyone to enjoy.
Pete was happiest when he was around music. He formed a band when he was in Grade 8. Pete was widely known as a skilled accordionist, playing in the Four Star Orchestra, the Drehers band, the Repeats and the Canadian Drifters. Pete played many weddings, anniversaries and Octoberfests. He also entertained at Senior Citizens Homes, Buffalo Days events and more. He loved to jam with his musician friends and he especially loved playing music with his family. Pete played music in the bands until he was 80 years old.
Pete spent his final months at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home. He was loved by his caregivers and many residents there. Right until the end, Pete used his humour to show his appreciation and love for the many people who took care of him.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who was involved with Pete’s care. What a difference they made in his and all the family’s lives.
A FUNERAL MASS will be celebrated at Holy Child Roman Catholic Church, 2636 7th Avenue East, Regina, SK on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Reverend Brad Fahlman and concelebrant Reverend Brian Meredith. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Pete to Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home, Canadian Cancer Society, Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan or a charity of your choice.
