Patricia « Patsy » Anne Barton

Patricia “Patsy” Barton
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear cousin and friend, Patricia “Patsy” Barton on June 12, 2018 at QEII Hospital, Halifax after a prolonged respiratory illness. She was 68 years of age.
Pat was born on November 27, 1949 in Halifax, the daughter of the late Dorothy Barton. Left to mourn her passing are Aunts Laura Daye, Halifax and Eva Cromwell, Dartmouth; Godsons Damon Cole and Anthony Sabastian, Dartmouth; Brian Ekwulugo and Tarik Drummond of Calgary; special brothers Brad Barton, Dartmouth and Romeo Barton, Montreal; special sisters Violet Manuel and Leslie Daye, Halifax; and Pearline Willis, London, Ontario; numerous cousins representing the Barton, Borden, Cromwell, Daye, Drummond & Symonds families. Best friends Sheila Lucas-Cole and Lorna Crawley also mourn her passing.
Pat also leaves a large number of former students from the north-end community of Halifax who she taught and mentored and who have succeeded in becoming respected young citizens in their chosen professions because of her teaching ethic and positive influence in their lives.
Pat graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School, Halifax and did post secondary studies at Mount St. Vincent University, earning Bachelor of Arts and Education Degrees and her Masters of Education Degree.
She was a well respected educator, having taught at the elementary level over a period of 40 years with the Halifax City/Regional School Boards, first with Joseph Howe, then Joseph A. MacKay, then St. Pat’s Alexandra and finally retiring as Vice-Principal at Joseph Howe School.
Pat was a “mover and a shaker”. Her involvement in the community included: member, New Horizons Baptist Church (formerly Cornwallis St. Baptist Church); Black Educators Association (BEA); Salvation Army/Open Arms; Hope Blooms; Council on African Canadian Education (CACE); and Inner City Advisory Education Committee. Pat was pretty much involved in most north-end community activities.
In her spare time, Pat liked reading and buying books, watching TV ( in particular CNN), music and dancing. She had recently taken up the art of quilting and was the proud owner of three beautiful handmade quilts.
Pat’s early departure has left an emptiness in everyone whose life she touched. She will be forever remembered for her tenacity, and strong will and honesty, especially with regard to responses to significant and relevant educational, social and community related issues.

Visitation will be on Monday, June 18, 2018 at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, Halifax from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at New Horizons Baptist Church, Halifax at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Rhonda Britton officiating. A repast will follow in the Church Hall, after which Interment will take place in Maplewood Cemetery, Jordantown, Digby County. Donations in memory of Pat may be made to New Horizons Baptist Church Building Fund or the Black Educators Association.
