Obituary of OLGA HERDY
Olga Herdy
On December 30, 2018, shortly after celebrating her 99th birthday with family and friends, Olga Herdy went to be with her Lord.
Olga was born in North Winnipeg to George and Maria Hrydylowsky, the fourth of six children. When she was 12, the family moved to a farm off of Grassmere Road in Middlechurch. Olga lived on the same property until April, 2017, receiving an award for being the longest lifetime resident of West St. Paul only a year earlier. It was on that farm that she cultivated her love of gardening; she was a true organic farmer who did not believe in pesticides of any sort. She also provided loving homes for many stray dogs and cats that were dropped off on her driveway.
Showing her adventurous side, Olga moved to California for a time in the 1950’s. She quickly returned when she was needed to help her sister Anne care for her ailing father. Family meant everything to her.
Olga worked in many offices as a secretary, including Deer Lodge Hospital and Thompson, Dorfman, Sweatman, LLP.
As she was fiercely independent, Olga seldom asked for help with anything. She enjoyed scenic drives, noticing every small detail along the way. She loved going for fancy lunches, especially when her soup and coffee were extra hot. She adored many generations of the children in the family!
Olga was a devout Catholic and a longtime member of St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church. She spent hours each week volunteering and working for the church she loved.
Olga dearly missed her sister Anne when she passed away in 2006. Left to mourn Olga’s passing is her only surviving sister, Elsie, as well as her nieces and nephews and their children.
Many thanks are due to the caring and compassionate staff at Middlechurch Personal Care Home. Olga was a favorite resident, making many miles in the hallways with her walker and “soaking up the sun” in the courtyard! Also, Olga’s family owes a special debt of gratitude to Joan, a most wonderful lady and friend.
Prayers will be said at St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church, 3597 Main Street in West St. Paul, on Wednesday, January 2 at 7:00 pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated by Father David Kowalski on Thursday, January 3 at 10:30 am, also at St. Theresa’s.
Olga’s request was “not too many flowers”. Since she was an avid supporter of many charities, we ask that those who wish to do so make a donation to their favorite charity in Olga’s name.
We’d say, “We love you, Auntie Olga.” To which she would reply, “I love you more.”
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de OLGA
