Humble, Kind and a True Gentleman
Norman was born on March 25, 1929 in Viking, Alberta, to parents Axel and Anna Strom who immigrated to Canada from Sweden and Norway. From age 15, he lived with his uncle Lars Strom in Prince George, B.C where he completed high school.
Norman graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geological Engineering. During his studies he worked as a surveyor in remote mountain areas of British Columbia. After graduation, he moved to Red Deer where he met the love of his life, Roberta Marie Vance. Norman and Roberta married and moved to Calgary where they raised their family and Norman enjoyed a long career at the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB). In the mid 1970s, Norman and his family spent two years in the Middle East. He retired as Vice Chairman of the ERCB in 1990.
Members of Woodcliff United Church, he and Roberta enjoyed volunteering with Neighbourlink delivering clothing and food to families in need. Norman enjoyed his passion for the outdoors and love of family by taking camping, canoeing, hiking and skiing trips with family friends and with the Skrastins Outdoor Club. Roberta was always by his side, with their beloved Irish Terrier Erin.
Norman is survived by his loving wife Roberta, children Vernon (Theresa), Kirk (Dawn) and Alison (Barrie) as well as his beloved grandchildren Roland, Daryl, Aleah and Eric, and his two sisters, Marie and Melba. Norman was predeceased by his mother Anna and father Axel, siblings Aileen, George, Stella, Hilda, and half brothers William and Clarence.
Norman was humble, kind and a true gentleman. He loved his family dearly and instilled his love of nature in his children and grandchildren. Whenever you are out in the mountains you will be with him; it was his favourite place to be.
