In Memoriam
Mom was born August 23, 1924 in Oud-Beijerland, South Holland and went to be with her Lord on August 18, 2018. She was the middle child of 5 children and was predeceased by her parents, husband, and siblings. Mom leaves 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Mom spent her formative teenage years in Holland during WW2. She married Cornelus Veldhoen May 18, 1953 and within a year they boarded the Groote Beer and set sail for a new life in Canada. Dad was able to find work quickly and they began to raise their 4 children: Ryne, Jette, Gord, and Mike. Mom and Dad lived in various homes before building a cute, modest sized bungalow in Humber Summit where we lived for years. They must have had some gypsy in their blood, because they moved a few more times before coming to Holland Christian Homes, where they lived in 4 different apartments. Throughout all of this time, they were devoted members of the Free Reformed Church, first in Holland then in their adopted country, Canada.
Mom’s primary role was as a wife and homemaker. Her love of children led her to be a foster mother to many babies and a few older children. She also managed to find time to be a crossing guard. The wages she earned as a guard allowed her to make a number of trips to visit her mother, family members and friends back in her homeland.
Mom took the oath of Canadian citizenship very seriously, to the point of attempting to learn French by filling notebooks with French language phrases. She even went so far as to purchase storage canisters for kitchen staples with French labels.
An independent woman, she learned how to drive a standard automobile soon after coming to Canada and continued to drive well into her 80’s. After Mom gave up her licence she wasn’t afraid to use public transit to get around town.
Underneath it all, Mom’s deepest desire was for her children and their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and anyone else she came in contact with to have the same personal relationship she had with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
