Maxine Beverly Watkin passed away in the Drumheller Hospital, a place she had worked for nearly 50 years, after a long struggle with cancer, on Saturday, October 13. Maxine, or « Max », as most called her, was born on January 2, 1947, in Hanna, Alberta to Ivan and Caroline Fano. She received her schooling in Hanna, and began her career after graduating in 1965, as a certified nursing aide, and started work in the Drumheller Hospital. It was here that she met and eventually married her husband, David. They left the valley for a few years, first to Red Deer, and then Calgary, where she worked at the Baker Sanatorium. When they came back to Drumheller, Maxine worked in acute care for awhile, but eventually transferred into Recreation Therapy, providing care for seniors, a job she loved and thrived at, for close to fifty years. Max is survived by her husband of fifty years, David, daughter Shawna and son-in-law Jason, and three grandchildren, Cole, Sasha, and Connor. Maxine is also survived by her siblings Bernice (Ivan), and Stanley (Louella), and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by their son Fred Watkin in 1988 and her parents. Maxine shared a love of gardening with Dave, and they enjoyed making their yard a showpiece of flowers and vegetables. She also shared this love with many of the senior residents at Continuing Care, engaging them to help with the gardening chores during the growing season. Maxine was also a valued member of the Drumheller K-Ette club, enjoying many a fun night out with the girls, a member of the Drumheller Legion Branch #22. A Celebration of Maxine’s life will be held in Drumheller at the Badlands Community Facility on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Dan Hendrickson of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Dalum officiating. Cremation has taken place and her ashes will be interred in the Drumheller Cemetery. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
