Obituary for
Mary « Lillian » Samson (Acton)
We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mary Lillian Samson, aged 90 of Truro, on December 13, 2018 at the Palliative Care Unit of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre surrounded by her loving family. Mom was born on Sept. 22, 1928 in Arichat, Cape Breton to the late Thomas and Mary (Stone) Acton, the eldest of five children. After graduating from Normal College in Truro, she briefly taught in Shubenacadie and Westmount, Cape Breton before marrying Norman Samson on August 4th, 1952 and moving back home to Isle Madame. She became a homemaker after having seven children and only returned to teaching in 1965 after the family moved to Truro. She taught at Salmon River Elementary School until her retirement and cared deeply for her students and their welfare. Mom was an excellent cook who, along with Dad, enjoyed entertaining many friends and family both at their home in Salmon River, their cabin in Greenfield and their summer place in Arichat. Mom always made family gatherings and important events memorable and fun and was a terrific sport, enjoying dressing up for a good laugh on occasion. Growing up, our house was filled with books and reference materials as our education was very important to both our parents. But being educated also meant learning experientially through caring for our many animals and pets, our gardens, and doing chores required in a large family. The values of hard work, honesty, and integrity were instilled in us from a young age. In recent years, Mom looked forward to having afternoon gatherings with her friends at her home and was always a gracious hostess, only having to end these gatherings in April of this year when she moved to the assisted living facility of Parkland in Truro. Mom always had a great memory and loved word games, looking forward to doing the daily crossword puzzles in the newspaper. Even in her elder years, Mom took great pride and interest in the lives of her many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Left to honour and remember her love are her seven children, Adrian (Nancy) Samson, Monica (Wayne) Delaney, Richard Samson, Lester (Mary) Samson, Beverly (Tom) Samson King, Doris (Gilbert) Samson Betts, all of Truro and Allan Samson of Kelowna, BC; her thirteen grandchildren, Jeff Samson, Amanda Samson Stratton, Nadine Samson Dorey, Sara Delaney, Desiree Samson, Kyle and Chad Samson, Jared, Patrick and Tanner Samson, Shannon and Bradley Crowe, and Peter Betts; her five great grandchildren; Siannah, Sawyer, Bellamy, Neela and Eli; her sister, Anita (Tye) Marchand, brothers Richard (Anne) Acton and Bernard (Debra) Acton, sisters in-law Rita Landry and Norma Samson, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman and her sister, Doris (Acton) Comeau. Cremation has taken place. In accordance with Mom’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held in Arichat, Richmond County, with interment in the Our Lady of Assumption Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson’s Canada or a charity of your choice.
