Mary Jane

Obituary for
Mary « Jane » Tataryn
After a 50 year siege, Jane succumbed to complications from multiple sclerosis, June 12, 2018 at St. Boniface Hospital.
Jane was predeceased by her father John Howden, mother Hazel, and sister Heather Nault. Left to mourn her passing are her husband of 30 years Ed Tataryn, son Dean Pritchard and wife Karen, brother-in-law Raymond Nault, and the many lifelong friends she made in nursing, notably Norma Hartwig and Diana Slemko.
Jane’s passing brought her full circle to St. Boniface Hospital, the same hospital where she completed her nurse’s training in 1966. Jane spent the next 20 years at the hospital, first in the medical intensive care unit and later as an operating room nurse before moving into a management position at Concordia Hospital.
Never one to complain about her illness, Jane believed there was always somebody who had things worse and that she was lucky to have lived as long as she did.
A single mother in the 70s and 80s, Jane always provided a stable and loving home for her son, something that wasn’t fully appreciated at the time, but with the passage of years has accrued a value beyond words.
In 1988, Jane married Ed Tataryn, her constant companion and steadfast support for the next 30 years.
For many years, Jane and MS appeared to have reached a stalemate.
That changed in 1990 when, during a province-wide nurses strike, Jane, now in management, returned to active nursing and worked more than 30 ten-to-twelve hour days in a row. Her health declined sharply and within a couple of years she was forced to go on disability, never to return to work.
In retirement, Jane indulged her love of reading (a book was never far from her grasp), taught herself how to make stained glass, and enjoyed regular dinner get-togethers with friends and family.
Jane made friends easily, many of them of the four-legged variety. She had many fond childhood memories of her Labrador Retriever, Ginger. Later in life, Jane and Ed adopted a rescue dog, Max, who shared Jane’s love and returned it tenfold.
Jane was a regular and generous supporter of many charitable causes, including the Winnipeg Humane Society, Siloam Mission and the Sunshine Fund.
Her light on earth has flickered out, but it will continue to burn brightly in our hearts as long as we last. God be with her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or Sunshine Fund.
