Mark Wilfred Patrick ‘Sonny’ Conway
1930-2018
CONWAY, Mark Wilfred Patrick
« Sonny » – It is with deep sadness that we
announce the passing of Mark Wilfred Patrick « Sonny » Conway
of White Head, Guysborough Co., on Thursday, April 26, 2018, in his
home, a home he built for his wife and family with his own two
hands.
Born September 15, 1930, Sonny was a man of incredible
strength, relentless fortitude and strong family values. He
lived his life on the water, spending 37 years as head lighthouse
keeper on White Head Island with his wife and family; a legacy he took
over from his father. Upon retiring, he fulfilled his dream
of lobster fishing out of his beloved Mosquito Cove for eight
years.
A master of all trades, Sonny spent his remaining years as a
carpenter, boat builder, hobby farmer, avid hunter, and
woodsman. Never idle, Sonny could be found still picking
berries with his daughters and grand-daughters, cutting and splitting
his own wood or fixing a roof, well into his 80’s.
A pillar of his community, Sonny would never miss an opportunity to
support a community event, have a yarn with friends or to help a
family member, friend or newcomer.
A story of true devotion, Sonny is survived by his first love
and adoring wife of almost 70 years, Annie Elizabeth « Betty »
Conrad, his children, Carmen (Kathy), Hazel Hill; Vera Rhynold
(Phillip), Antigonish; Lori Boudreau, Port Felix; Patrick (Marina),
White Head; and Cathy (Brad), Moncton, NB; 14 grandchildren and 15
great grandchildren. He will also be sadly missed by his
twin sisters, Celene Munroe (Arnold), Enfield; and Louise Lumsden,
Canso. Sonny will be reunited with his daughter, Lynn
Jelleau; son, Mark and infant children Joseph and Susan, his parents,
Wilfred and Marie (Richard) and sister, Marie
Hynes.
A lifelong member and supporter of his church, funeral mass
will be held for Sonny from St Joseph’s Roman Catholic
Church, Port Felix on Tuesday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. with Father
Jonathan Nnajiofor officiating. Visitation will be Monday, April
30, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in St. Joseph’s as well.
Burial with be in the parish cemetery. Donations
can be made to the St Joseph’s Parish Building Fund or
Diabetes Canada. Arrangements are under the care and direction of
Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Words of comfort may be
