It is with love and gratitude for a life well lived that the family of Marjorie Jane Bruce announce her passing at the age of 99 years at the Devonshire Care Centre on June 23, 2018. She was predeceased by her husband William John Bruce and her siblings Ruth, Eva, Wilfrid and Ben. Marjorie leaves to mourn and to celebrate her life her daughters Linda (Blaise) and Barbara (Michael); as well as her granddaughters Natalie (Stephajn) and Katrina (Graeme) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Sedgewick Alberta, Marjorie was raised by her father and fiercely independent grandmother who instilled in her a strong sense of self-determination.
Marjorie was a tomboy as a young girl and her love of sports continued throughout her life. A die-hard hockey, football and curling fan, she spent many contented hours in front of the TV, with her knitting, crocheting or other handiwork as she followed her favorite teams. A keen reader, she devoured books at a great rate, and passed along a love of reading to her daughters.
She pursued an early career as a hairdresser until she settled into the role of wife and mother, supporting her husband as he worked his way through university to earn his PhD. For her efforts in helping him write his papers, read his English books and more, Marjorie was honored in 1953 by the University of Washington Chapter of the National Association of University Dames with the degree of P.H.T. (putting hubby through).
Marjorie and Bill enjoyed traveling, regularly taking long road trips in Canada and the US, but also trips to Hawaii, Great Britain and Europe, and then later, a few years as snowbirds in Florida. She cared lovingly for her ailing husband who died from Alzhiemer’s disease in 1994.
In her later years, Marjorie poured her passion into quilting, and enjoyed the companion of like-minded friends on several quilting trips, the most memorable being Ireland and Washington DC.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church in Edmonton in early August (date yet to be confirmed).
The family is very grateful to the dedicated staff at Devonshire Care Centre who cared for Marjorie in the last years of her life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Wellspring Centre Edmonton, or a charity of one’s choice.
