Mary (Mae) Ross Maurer passed away on December 19, 2018. Mae was predeceased by her husband, Cleve, in February 2016. She is survived by her sons, Jack (Eva) of Whittier, California, Mark (Judy) of Telkwa, BC and Doug of Victoria, BC; grandchildren, Elsie, Lorena, Alexia, Keely and Andrew; five great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Born on June 2, 1924 in Montreal to John and Isa Fergusson, she was raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, along with her older brother Jack who she looked up to. Following high school, Mae took a secretarial course at Halifax Academy and began working as a secretary for CN.
She met Cleve, an American, in Halifax as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1942, Tragedy struck when Mae’s only sibling, Jack, was lost off the coast of England when a bomber he was flying went down during the war. Mae and Cleve’s plans for a large Halifax wedding were curtailed and they were married in a smaller family service in Montreal in June 1943. Cleve went off to England for a short period of time, while Mae stayed with her parents. The US army air core came recruiting experienced US pilots, so Cleve, being a US citizen, signed up.
Mae and Cleve moved to Phoenix Arizona, where their first son, Jack, was born. When Cleve was discharged after the war, they moved back to his hometown of Newhall, California, where they had two more sons, Mark and Doug. In 1969, Mae and Cleve moved to a cattle ranch in Northern British Columbia near Telkwa. In 2001, they moved to Victoria, BC.
Mae had a long relationship with The Lord. In Newhall, she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, belonged to the church circle and later became church secretary. At first in Northern BC, she attended weekly prayer meetings with her neighbours out on Walcott Station Road. Later, she became active in the Mountainview Pentecostal Assembly and enjoyed weekly bible study sessions. In Victoria, she joined the Oak Bay Gospel Assembly and made many new friends. She enjoyed hosting ladies’ bible study in her home. She also helped with an ESL group.
Mae enjoyed camping. They travelled extensively throughout Canada, the US including Alaska and Hawaii, Europe and Israel. She was a square dancer, a member of the Quick Women’s Institute, and took up downhill skiing at the age of 62!
Interment will be held at Royal Oak Burial Park, Victoria, BC at 11:00 am on Friday, December 28, 2018, followed by a Celebration of Life at Oak Bay Gospel Assembly, 1900 Oak Bay Avenue, Victoria, BC at 12:30 pm on the same day.
