Obituary for Leonard John Hinton
On Tuesday, March 6, 2018, the world became a sadder place when Leonard John Hinton left this earth, in his 93rd year of a life well lived.
Len was born in Vancouver where he grew up and met his greatest love, Eileen, his wife of 70 years. Together, they built a home in Burnaby where he lived and worked until his final days. Len and Eileen talked fondly of their skiing ventures up Hollyburn Mountain, or renting cabins in Deep Cove for the summer.
During WW2, Len worked for Burrard Dry Docks in North Vancouver building naval ships. Later, he built houses for returning war veterans, where he learned the trade of carpentry. Len worked on many of the small 1950’s bungalows that line Vancouver streets today. After many years building houses, he started his own cabinet making business. He retired in 1990 after 45 years in the trades. For his family, the smell of freshly cut wood will always remind us of him.
In his “spare” time, Len was happiest in the company of close friends and family, especially with a project to tackle and something to build. With a toolbox in hand, a group of family “helpers”, and an unconventional plan sketched on the back of a paper napkin, Len spent many happy summers building and maintaining a family cabin on Sakinaw Lake, passing on his craft and work ethic to his children and grandchildren.
Many people looked to Len as a father, whether by birth, by marriage, or through a unique bond he fostered. Len will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Eileen, 5 children (Doug, Rick, Val, Cyndy, and Jim), 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and an ever-growing extended family of spouses, and new relationships.
We love you Dad. Bon voyage to your next adventure. We will always be together in our hearts.
