“What the mind can conceive and believe, and the heart desire, you can achieve.” (Dr. Norman Vincent Peale)
Kathleen “Kay” Kirkpatrick died peaceful in the Palliative care unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital on January 16, 2018 surrounded by love and gratitude. A Maritimer by birth she was born to Francis and Marguerite Murray in Saint John, NB on July 8, 1931. She married Ainsley Allen in Saint John, NB on January 6, 1951 and together they had 7 children: Jane (Ian) McDonald, Cathy, David (Judy) Allen, Michael (Linda) Allen, Colleen (John) Benson, Kevin, and Dr. Maureen Allen (Dr. Jim Williams).
When her husband died unexpectedly at the age of 30 years Kay “dug deep” to raise her young family (which included a set of triplets) often using the words of Dr. Vincent Peale to help guide her philosophy and strength. She would later pass the readings of Dr. Peale onto her children and grand-children emphasizing the importance of education and family. At 40 years of age, when the triplets were 12, Kay returned to school and earned her Registered Nursing Assistant (RNA) degree and worked 25 years as a Pediatric Nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She wanted her kids to see that an education was your freedom to a better life.
She re-married Hugh Kirkpatrick later in life, expanding our family to include Michael (Peggy) and David (Cathy) Kirkpatrick. Her grandchildren: Katie, Maureen, Jill, Matthew, Peter, Erin, Ashley, Philip, Michael Allen, Michael Benson, John, James, Patrick, Jason and Brent were the light of her life. She made a point of remembering birthdays and would send card’s annually. She also held a special place in her heart for great grand-children and her many nieces and nephews. Kay was predeceased by her loving husband’s as well as her brother Douglas Murray and sister Marina London.
She is survived by two sisters Audrey (Vic) and Barbara (Doug), brother Jim (Delores), 7 children, 15 grand-children, 14 greatgrand-children and many nieces and nephews.
